5.0 out of 5 stars A gritty look at NYPD from an ex-insider, September 6, 2011
This review is from: The Tarnished Shield (Paperback)
This book is a very entertaining read, as well as a scathing indictment on the corruption that ran rampant in the department in decades past. It reads like a suspense novel written by a former D.A. when exploring the legal issues, and like a cop drama at the same time. It is also a story about the triumph of a good man that everyone admires. At the end of the day, the main character's basic decency saves his bacon. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, realistic novel with compelling characters and story!, September 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Tarnished Shield (Paperback)
John Delmar combines his years with the NYPD and spellbinding story telling in The Tarnished Sheild. This realist novel makes the reader feel they are getting an insiders look behind the scences of the most written about and cinematically portrayed police departments in the world, the NYPD. This book is a great read, especially for anyone who is a fan of one of the many awarding winning prime time police dramas found on network TV. The characters are engaging and the action is compelling, highly recommended not just for police novel readers but anyone who likes a great story with a realistic feel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once I started the book, I didn't want to put it down., August 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Tarnished Shield (Paperback)
John Delamer provides a compelling fabrication of the emotions of Jack Harley as well as a succinct story line. The characters are startlingly believable. At first I was shocked by the profanity; but I as I read further, I realized that such language was a convincing element in the character development. We all know too well that corruption exist in all levels of our government and our service agencies. But now I have a better appreciation of how Jack Harley could be torn apart by his loyalty to his comrades, and his frustration with the system. I was pleasantly surprised by the ending.

This review is from: The Tarnished Shield (Paperback)
John Delamer has written a geat book for those who enjoy this genre and for those new to cop fiction. His understanding of the interworkings of the "law and order" system is evident and his ability to create suspense is terrific. This is a page turner for the reader can't wait to see what has befallen the hero...and things do happen.

4.0 out of 5 stars An ex-cop knows how to write!, July 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Tarnished Shield (Paperback)
John Delamer knows his turf. But he is not just an ex-cop doing some writing. He is an accomplished writer who happens to have once been a cop. He skillfully and symbolically tells a cautionary tale of politics and morality. Delamer might not like the parallel, but we still have Special Prosecutors on the front pages of our newspapers. The Tarnished Shield takes place in New York, but it is as contemporary and relevant as today's conflicts in other tarnished venues.

5.0 out of 5 stars A portrait of big city police work painted with words., June 26, 1998

This review is from: The Tarnished Shield (Paperback)
John Delamer scores a home run with The Tarnished Shield. Couldn't stop reading it. Great plot, characters and dialogue cover to cover. Delamer shares with the reader a rare glimpse of the traditions of the NYPD, and of intense conflict in the lives of those who protect and serve in the Big Apple.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and truthful about police departments., June 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Tarnished Shield (Paperback)
As a retired police officer I have found this book to be true and correct in some cases of police corruption. The book itself was easy to read and to understand the plot. It told the story of some of the many police officers problems and the direct interference by upper bass. Also the writer truly understands the problem that does exist today and in his time of service as a NYPD officer.........
