YAY! It's pouring down raining and I don't care. "Play All Day" just happened to arrive and now the kids are off having a ton of fun on the kitchen table and floor. They've punched out flowers and trees, princesses and monkeys, and they are putting on a finger puppet show. (Who knew princesses were acquainted with Dr. Who, and the monkeys, Donkey Kong.) The fold-up boxes became traps and houses....

After lunch they punched out some of the game pieces, playing the games they were meant to play, as well as a few they made up on their own.

THE SKINNY:::
"Play all Day" is a cool book. It has all sorts of shapes and characters and things you can punch out, so that the play potential is limited only by your child's age and imagination.

My two children are boy and girl, currently 8 and 10, so they don't need any assistance in either punching out the pieces or folding them into shapes or making them into finger puppets. Younger children will most likely need help to do this. And if they are young enough, they are going to need to be monitored so that they don't eat the pieces--lol.

Highly recommend this book as a great tool for small-motor exercise, and for hand-eye coordination. And for FUN, of course.

The sub-caption is A Really Giant Book of Punch-Out-and-Play Games, Toys, Finger Puppets, Boxes and More! There's a reason they chose to print that on the front cover, because it's a very accurate description of what you'll find inside. Gosh, I love Taro Gomi. He has proven himself the king of curbing boredom with his big books of Scribbles, Doodles, and Squiggles. This book takes a slightly different direction by making the play three-dimensional, though I can see how Punchies may not have been the best title.

This isn't just a book of flat objects you punch out. These are three dimensional play things that really go the distance (hence the title ... Play All Day) after they have been removed. Drum up a game of Ring Toss with the stand up target and two sets of patterned rings or put together a set of the Treasure Boxes to create your own game. There's an awesome set of finger puppets that includes people and animals as well as smiling flowers and trees. One of my favorite is the Zoo Animals - the legs are pieced separately and attach to the bodies, so the animals stand unassisted.

This is the sort of book that is a true gold mine on a rainy stay-in-the-house sort of day or any time you are in need of a quiet activity. I like that the activities are quite varied - make a string of hooked monkeys, put together some picture frames, or set up an entire village. All the pieces are made from heavy cardstock, and the tabs on the constructed boxes are nice and wide, making this a durable set when treated properly. There are very few printed instructions, but the tabbed pieces are clearly marked, so it is more a matter of punch and go!

My 5 year old grandchild loved this book. As the title suggests, 'play all day' is what she did - for 3 days after school! As an illustrator, I appreciated the beautifully rendered art and whimsey of the ideas. There are many great games and toys for kids, including pleasing art for art-loving grandparents! Strongly recommend this book for little ones with imagination.

"Play All Day"
by Taro Gomi
(Chronicle Books, 2010)
----------------------------------------
This is a truly fabulous activity book from Japanese author/designer Taro Gomi. It takes the devil-may-care, ignore-the-rules, pro-creativity messages of his Doodling and Squiggles books and puts them into immediate action, with a series of brightly-colored, wildly imaginative, deliriously fun punch-out play items -- goofy little finger puppets, fold-together paper boxes, a ring-toss game and a fold-out, pop-up cityscape with little cars and buildings and trees, all infused with Gomi's cute-but-clever design aesthetic. My kid never really latched onto the doodling books, but LOVED these projects. Ideal for parent-child bonding, or self-directed play and also a richly rewarding artistic endeavor. Sparks the creative mind! (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain children's book reviews)

My 5-year-old has had so much fun with this book! And, to be honest, so have I. We took it on a 90-minute train trip and it occupied us almost the whole time...and we left lots to do another time. The cubes are too fun, and the city was a blast. I can't say enough good things about this book -- you will love it! (Regarding traveling with it, the finger puppets and the standing animals are a little hard to bundle up and carry away when you reach your destination...if you bring a Ziploc bag or something like that to put them in, you'll be glad you did. Enjoy! And thank you, Taro Gomi/publishers/whoever else!!!
