Surfer Blood came pretty much out of nowhere last year with its stellar debut album "Astro Coast", which I had high in my list of favorite albums of the year. And live they were special too (more on that later). While we eagerly await the second studio album, we receive eagerly awaited new material, in the form of this EP.

"Tarot Classics" (6 tracks; 23 min.) starts off with an irresistable "I'm Not Ready", and what immediately is clear is that the sound is much cleaner (but not over-polished), much less low-fi, than anything on "Astro Coast". This is only confirmed by the next song, the fantastic "Miranda", which sounds as if I've heard it somewhere already before (reminding me of Weezer, frankly). It is my favorite track on here. "Voyager Reprise" kicks off with a long intrumental intro before songwriter/lead singer Jean Paul Pitts finally joins in. The song reminds me of the Shins. The last original new song is "Drinking Problem", which sounds different from the previous three, slightly left-center and spacey, but still quite good. The EP is rounded out by two decent remixes (of Voyager Reprise and Drinking Problem), which are just different enough to be interesting without making the songs unrecognizable.

In all, this is an excellent EP, period. It only underscores how eagerly the second studio album from the Florida band is being awaited. Meanwhile, I saw these guys live at the MidPoint Music Festival here in Cincinnati in September, 2010, and Surfer Blood was one of the headliners, and what a fantastic show they brought. Pitts is a very engaging front man, and the band brought a blazing set. Meanwhile "Tarot Classics" is highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good appetizer for LP2 October 31, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
Even though a lot of things indicate I shouldn't love this band, I really enjoyed their debut LP, Astrocoast. From the sound of this EP, their next album may be even better. The first three songs here are good enough for it to be worth the price. "Voyager Reprise" is particularly lovely (perhaps the best SB song to date for my money), and "I'm Not Ready" and "Miranda" both show off even more refined songwriting chops. These guys have a bright future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sound of thier own November 26, 2012

Here's a band that oozes the surf rock alternative name, but once your hear the chorus and incredible songs you will want to hear more by this band. Surfer Blood has a sound of their own and are truly talented.
