The Good, the Bad, and the Downright Useful,
By Ty Bevington "A Vate in the Cartomancy dept. ... (Columbus, OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tarot for Every Day: Ideas and Activities for Bringing Tarot Wisdom into Your Daily Life (Paperback)
'Tarot For Every Day' is a book designed to help the reader bring tarot magick and awareness to everyday living. Rather than for 'special occaisons' or a reading on a particular request or question, it provides many other ways to connect with the tarot. This book is designed to be used with some prior knowledge of the tarot, or in conjuction with a 'tarot 101' book for new readers.
First, the 'Bad'- the author is a follower of Starhawk and the Reclaiming Community, so almost all of this is directed to women and goddess traditions, with little or no positive mention of men. While this in itself is not 'bad', but this orientation does limit the appeal and usefulness of much of the material to those of who do not subscribe to goddess only traditions. It also drawa many of its examples using the 'Mother Peace tarot', so a familiarity with that deck is advisible. Now, the 'Good'- the book really challenges the reader to look at the cards in new, creative ways. While cooking based on the tarot may not be for everyone, there are some great meditative and creative art projects that are worth exploring. The'Downright Useful' are the correspondences. While most any tarot 101 books gives some common correspondences for colors, elements, planets, etc, this book gives us fabrics, foods/spices, minerals-things a little off the beaten path. While tarot color dressing may sound a little fluffy, using those correspondences for altar covers, incense or spice use, goes beyond the usual help offered by a tarot 101 book. So, if you can get past the Starhawk slant (if that is not your path) it does over some very creative ways to utlize the tarot in a powerful way.

Forming A Relationship With The Tarot,
By tarot1234@yahoo.com (http://fly.to/nickhaswings) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tarot for Every Day: Ideas and Activities for Bringing Tarot Wisdom into Your Daily Life (Paperback)
This book is incredible for forming a relationship with the Tarot whether you have been reading it for years or are brand-new. However, there is virtually nothing about analyzing/reading the cards, so people very new to the tarot should also get a "beginner book" with interpretations and such.

This review is from: Tarot for Every Day: Ideas and Activities for Bringing Tarot Wisdom into Your Daily Life (Paperback)
This is a wonderful tarot book, full of fun activities and ideas, as well as tarot spreads, recipies (yes, recipies!) and much, much more that are all useful, fun to do and easy to follow. However, I do suggest that the reader has a basic background and familiarity with the cards before starting, as it doesn't give meanings or descriptions of the cards per se. It is even good to share with children, as they wourld enjoy some of the activities also. The author has a very warm writing style and it seems like she is talking with you, not telling you, as she describes things. And, it's not dry and humorless like many other tarot books. A wonderful addition to the library of anyone who has tarot cards. I only wish I had purchased it sooner!
