More About the Author

Back in the winter of 1982 I was running a Tarot Course out of hired rooms close to the Citibank Building in New York City. There were very few 'teach yourself' books on Tarot around in those days, so Courses were popular with would-be Tarot readers.

For $5.00 a lesson my students got printed notes, coffee, doughnuts, hands-on practice and a lot of laughs. $5.00 wasn't a lot of money even thirty years ago, but frankly it still seemed a lot to ask considering that people had to turn up on a Wednesday evening after work in cold, dark and snowy weather.

The Tarot Workbook is based on the notes I used for the Course. I like to think it has saved a few people from chilblains if nothing else...

Since writing The Tarot Workbook I have written (and Kindled) several other books. At the moment I'm working on Discover Numerology and a practical guide to using self-hypnosis, which I hope to finish early in 2012.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best text book courses on how to read Tarot Cards, March 29, 1998

I bought this book when it first came out, over ten years ago and I still have it. It's one of the best books you can buy on how to read the Tarot. This one really gives you alot of information, and it also gives you a great step by step plan for learning it on your own and even spaces to draw your very own deck. You also get plenty of wonderful Tarot spreads. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn to read the Tarot. It's fun and informative and great for beginners and more advanced students. It feels just like having a private Tarot Tutor.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Step-by-step Process..., April 19, 2001
By
Hanley Doc Harding (Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Tarot Workbook: Understanding and Using Tarot Symbolism (Paperback)
I have owned this book for many years. It is VERY thorough and informative and guides you to a good working capability of the tarot, providing much background and ancillary information. It is NOT for people who merely want to play with or amuse themselves with the tarot, it is for SERIOUS students who wish to become highly proficient at the tarot. To this end, its step-by-step methodology gives a solid foundation for successful and enjoyable use of the tarot deck. One drawback is that nowhere among the more complex geometrical spreads is there an indication of in which direction the cards are dignified (upright) or ill-dignified (reversed), and so, one does not know which interpretation to give some of the cards in the spread. Other than that, the SERIOUS tarot student will find a wealth of knowledge throughout the book. April, 2001, Hanley Doc Harding.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant, commonsense book, November 13, 2000

This review is from: The Tarot Workbook: Understanding and Using Tarot Symbolism (Paperback)
This would have to be the best Tarot manual I have ever seen. It combines a practical, commonsense approach with a LOT of exercises and practical suggestions. The language is always simple, modern and clear and the lack of individual card illustrations means that it can be used with any 78 card deck. Toward the end, there is an introduction to the Kabbalah and meditation and visualization exercises.

In regards to other reader's comments, this book DOES suggest starting with the first two cards of the deck (the ace and two of wands) and learning to combine the two cards in a simple reading, before going on to using three cards and so on and so forth, but there are graded spreads for every level. There is no mention of learning all 78 cards before going on to spreads. It may not be the best thing for people who just "want a bit of fun", but it's far and away the best book for people who really want to learn the Tarot.
