2.0 out of 5 stars Self Titled by Tarralyn Ramsey
The winner of Vh1's American Idol-esque competiton, Born to Diva, was *gasp* someone who actually deserved to win. Tarralyn Ramsey proves on her debut album that she indeed does have the pipes it takes to "diva", however she doesn't have the material to back it up. The album is very generic, over-produced hip-hop style R & B with a hint of a ghetto twist,...

Tarralyn Ramsey is one of the few newer, younger singers who are actually fresh, refreshing and who can actually SING. Tarralyn comes from the school of Mariah Carey and definitely Whitney Houston, who she sounds a lot like. Tarralyn hearkens from true R&B and the Gospel roots definately come out throughout the CD. My major complaint is that she has not received the recognition and attention that she so rightfully deserves but she is a great singer and the CD actually displays that.

WHERE yOU ARE- Produced by Gregory Christopher and Cory Rooney, this uptempo Darkchild love song has a very hot beat to it. It kind of reminds me of a Darkchild beat; however a fresh element is thrown in, Tarralyn's voice and the catchy hook saves the song. The song is a nice, laidback, summer riding in your ride kind of song. It is nothing too heavy but it is also not disposable at the same time. A

REMEDY- Produced by Wirlie Morris, she begins this cut sounding like Whitney Houston herself on the humming note. This is one of the songs that stuck out to me in my initial listen of the CD. The song is one of those heartfelt, beat heavy slow jams with Tarralyn singing her heart out about someone being and bringing the love remedy. At the end, she takes it on home shouting out all the emotions that the song evokes. This is the current single which has been making some ends at Urban AC outlets somewhat. A+

GOIN CRAZY- Produced by Malcolm Shabazz and Cito Crandle, this has that Darkchild sound to it. It also sounds like a Contemporary Gospel song like something that Trinitee 5:7 would tackle. The song is another love song about being "head over heels" for someone. This up/midtempo is nothing special but it is definately listenable. My favorite part is the B-Section. A-

BABY u KNOW- Featuring Murphy Lee and produced by Gregory Christopher, this fresh uptempo which samples Minnie Riperton's "LOVING yOU" is tight to death and I am disappointed that the song did not blow up at radio because it deserves to be a hit. It is certainly a fresh mix and Murphy Lee's rap adds a lot to the song. Tarralyn's soprano register is also shown as she hits some C notes on "feel" before the rap and she attempts to do the Minnie Riperton high note although it can be heard that that is not really in her range totally, she still handles it well. This song is just hot totally and I like the different changes from the B-Sections to the chorus to the outro. A+

UP AGAINST ALL ODDS- 1st single with an accompanying video, this is the song that she sang to win on VH1'S BORN TO DIVA. Produced by Cory Rooney and Dan Shea, this is true Gospel-sounding. This could literally be a Gospel song and Tarralyn takes it home at the end. My only problem is that it is overproduced and the climax is a little too generic and common but the message of the song is beautiful. A-

TAKE ME AWAY- Produced by Robery Anthony, this cut really does take you away. It is a nice, laidback midtempo love song that is very breezy and enjoyable to listen to. It is nothing extremely unique but it is a great song. A

DOLO- Produced by Troy Oliver, this is one of those "I'm letting you know the business" type of song. I have never really been attracted to this song and I usually skip over it when I listen to the CD. The song is nothing remarkable. B

GOTTA HAVE yOU- Produced by Cory Rooney and Greg Bruno, this has an old vibe to it like some 80s uptempo with a modern update. It sounds like something Whitney would sing but I like it alot for what it is. It is a nice love song with good vocals and all the elements of the song work together to make one listenable track. A

FLY AWAY- Midtempo, reggae track produced by Peter Wade Keusch, John Hill, Cory Rooney and Dan Shea, this cut really does make me wanna fly away. It is just so transcending and freeing and is one of my favorite cuts. Listen to the message about just flying away with the one you love. A very peaceful song it is. A+

MADE FOR yOU-Produced by Cory Rooney and Dan Shea, here is the ballad of all ballads. If you have not noticed all the top, big voiced divas have a song that is a trademark ballad to showcase their emotional delivery and vocal abilities. Although UP AGAINST ALL ODDS would arguably fit that bill, this song comes close and is a very touching love song about being truly destined for someone else, literally being made for someone else. Tarralyn handles the song well with an ability and ease for the more experienced. A+

10,000 THANK YOU'S- This is what makes me appreciate and respect her even more because she gives God His props and acknowledges Him with this touching song that many of us can relate to just about being grateful for the blessings from God. She sounds so comfortable singing this. Produced by Cito Crandle, Greg Bruno and Cory Rooney. A+

This CD had to take time to grow on me because I was not intially impressed with but I enjoy it very much so now. It is so peaceful with positive messages of love and praise to God wrapped in true R&B/soulful grooves with a voice that does not oversing but one that sings well. I am so tired of all these young singers who are blowing up but the people who can actually sing get no recognition. Tarralyn can sing and this CD shows that very fact.

Tarralyn Ramsey is a five star artist. However I give the CD a three and a half because there are really only a few songs on this very short CD that are praiseworthy. She especially does a beautiful job with "Remedy", and "Made for You." To be honest, I think she has the sound of a lot of Artists all rolled into one like WHitney Houston of course, Kelly price, Karen Clark-Sheard and a few others. The vocals on this cd are amazing but the lyrics to a few of the songs are just lame but Taralyn's vocals make you want to listen to the song regardless how terrible the lyrics.
Her producers really played it safe with this CD which isn't too bad when the artist has great vocals. She has the potential to have a very large career if she can get some better lyrics and beats. They should have done more publicity for her CD. I was looking foward to this CD to drop but I never heard anything about it until I looked on amazon. All in all it's an okay CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Talent - Great album - only disappointment it wasn't supported, May 27, 2006

I am so tired of pretty girls with subpar voices. Tarralyn can really sing, she reminds me of Whitney Houston when Whitney first came out. She has a powerful voice and a wonderful variety of rich uptempo, mid-tempo and ballad songs. Anyone who believes this album was a waste of time doesn't know a great voice. I'm hoping more people will support Tarralyn's forthcoming works. She's truly the kind of singer who is a dying breed (thanks to hip-hop). I want to hear a person sing, hold a note and maintain a beautiful sound and Tarralyn is that artist. May God continue to Bless her and if you want to hear a great album buy this album of wonderful songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, July 14, 2004

I know Ms Tarralyn Ramsey from her annointed gospel CD and I was hooked ever since. I was surprised to see her particpating in the Vh1 DIVA contest because it was a secular contest, but I ain't mad at her. I'm glad she is out there making her dreams come true. I VOTED for her and was glad to see her take the title.

One thing I'm not happy about is that her record label is not promoting Tarralyn period. I didn't even know her CD was in the store.

All and all I love the CD, but I was hoping for songs with more substances. I love "Up Against All Odds", "Made for You", "10,000 thank you's", "Remedy", and I have to admit, I'm a hip-hop fan, and I like "Dolo" too. With that said, I would recommend this CD to everyone I know because Ms Tarralyn is a DIVA with a VOICE who can sang.

God Bless

The winner of Vh1's American Idol-esque competiton, Born to Diva, was *gasp* someone who actually deserved to win. Tarralyn Ramsey proves on her debut album that she indeed does have the pipes it takes to "diva", however she doesn't have the material to back it up. The album is very generic, over-produced hip-hop style R & B with a hint of a ghetto twist, evident on tracks such as the Murphy Lee featured "Baby U Know", "Dolo" and the albums opener "Where You Are", all of which sound like out takes from Christina Milian's debut. The album stumbles along the entire time being saved only by the incredible ballad "Up Against all Odds" & another ballad "Made for You" which showcase her vocal ability all while featuring a catchy melody. Good luck to her in the future, but with material like this I don't see life in the industry past this release.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hummmm, June 19, 2004
This review is from: Tarralyn Ramsey (Audio CD)
I have been waiting for this CD since she won Born to Diva! I have checked this site repeatedly to see when it would go on sale. I even asked Tarralyn when I met her here in Atl. I knew this was going to be good so I listened to it. Listened again and again. I cannot figure out how such a beautiful and powerful voice could get stuck with terrible songs! The two songs from Born were excellent (Against All Odds and Made for You). After that it is hard to digest. There are two or three other songs on there that you can sing along to while you clean, but nothing that you will hear and say, "This is my song!" Tarralyn's voice will give you chills, but unfortunately her producers did not have enough confidence in her to let it stand out. She sounds like the young Whitney Houston singing Backstreet Boys songs (overproduced and generic).

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just talent...., December 21, 2006
This review is from: Tarralyn Ramsey (Audio CD)
I remembered Tarralyn from her gospel endeavours. When I saw her competing on VH1's Born to Diva, I didn't know whether or not the "world" was ready for a voice like hers. No matter what she sings, whether it's gospel or secular, her God-given abilities are undeniable. She is a powerhouse! As a Christian, I have a serious problem with others in the faith who prefer to critize when a gospel artist crosses over. They went crazy when BeBe & CeCe Winans had songs cross-over. I know CeCe, and I haven't seen anyone so real and Spirit-led in the gospel industry. She hasn't waivered in her faith one bit just because secular stations gave her music air play. Personally, I believe that just as we live in this world and manage to keep our morals in tact, an artist can sing a variety of music and still be a witness for Christ. I always use the fruit of the Spirit as a gage in terms of what kind of music I listen to or things I watch on TV. This album celebrates love in a respectable manner. Tarralyn hasn't lowered her standards- she's reached out to an audience who otherwise may not have known how cool Christianity is and the freedom we have in Christ. The last time I checked, Jesus went INTO the world to preach the gospel. He didn't just stick with His disciples and exclude anyone who wasn't of like-faith. If anything, He influenced them and ultimately changed their lives. We've all been commissioned by God. What are you doing to change the world?

Wow. This Girl Is Amazing. She Has The Voice that has officialy put her in the Diva Court with the amazing voices of Aretha, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, and now Tarralyn. Thats how good she is! She could have had better material but this material is just as good. THe Best songs are The Soaring ballad "Remedy", The Powerful "Up Against All Odds"', Raggae brushed "Fly Away", and the one ballad where she sounds the most like Mrs. Houston is On the beautiful ballad "Made For You". Her new single "Baby U Know" is Crazy. You will love it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Much Talent for This, June 19, 2004

A talent of this level deserves much better material than this. When I heard the single 'Up Against All Odds' a few months ago, my only question was who is this and why haven't I heard of her. After doing a little research, I discovered she had a previously released undiscovered gem of a gospel album in the market. My initial take was what a breath of fresh air to hit the music scene. I bought the CD single 'Up Against All Odds' with full anticipation of the soon to be released album 'Tarralyn Ramsey'. Now that I have it, all I can say is disappointment. The vocal quality is clearly present, however it is overpowered by heavy beats and weak lyrics. I am not one to get lost in any genre, but this hip hop beat sound aint't for this artist. I can see the Whitney comparison in voice quality, but this poor production is too Whitney-after-Bobby-ish. One of the few offerings of note on this CD is 'Made for You'. That song is what I am talking about. Pure, unadulterated soul with unparalleled vocals. Tarralyn, let Beyonce and Monica do there thing, and you do yours- sang! If there is to be another album, I hope the voice is put back in front of the music.

4.0 out of 5 stars BORN to DIVA 4.5 * * * * !!, June 17, 2004
This review is from: Tarralyn Ramsey (Audio CD)
I knew after seeing this young woman from my hometown, ATL, on VH1 singing (...), she was going to be great. And this cd proves it. Her voice is just as electric as it was on the show. Even when the material was just okay, her voice transcended the mediocrity of the material and made it into good music. STANDOUTS: Going Crazy for me is where the cd really began to pick up. It's catchy and has a great hook. I really enjoy Murphy Lee ( who I normally don't care for) with Tarralyn she has the genuiness about her that really shines on this track. My favorite was the UP Against All Odds, straight from the Born to Diva show. Her voice is just as beautiful I mean she really can sing. Just imagine if Tarralyn had gotten on American Idol with Fantashia, Jennifer, and Latoya can you say 4th of July! FIREWORKS! Take me away is a little boring, but the last minute picks it up because her voice completely soars. DOLO is a funky jam that shows Tarralyn's voice and her 'no bullsh*t' attitude. GOTTA HAVE YOU is a straight funky song with a nice beat. I was like this sounds like somin from Whitney's "I'm your baby tonight" cd, except this is much better. FLY AWAY is (next to up against all odds) is my fave song. She really sounds like WHouston on this one, but I like it more for the Carribbean feel to it. The steel drums and the carefree lyrics. Her vocals her beautiful, it makes me feel good to be a West Indian when I hear this song. Made For You is a nice ballad, but if I'm not mistaken isn't this the song the girl from New York sang on Born to Diva. But Tarralyn does a great job! The last song 10,000 THANK YOus is a nice closer for this solid debut. The one thing that I like about this cd is that most debuts, the producers try to play it safe and release a safe record to build a strong base and stay out of controversy. But this a solid release. The things I don't like about it is that it was not promoted well. The only reason I knew that her cd was out, was looking at BET and listening to it. And I am an avid music fan (I check vh1, mtv, and billboard every day so for me not to know is a travesty). The thing that I am afraid of is that no one knows her cd came out. I have not heard a song on the radio or seen a video. C'mon Mr. Mottola and Corey Rooney let's get it together we can't let Tarralyn pass us by.
