4.0 out of 5 stars Why can't all bagpipe music sound this good?
I used to think that bagpipes were the missing link between music and noise. Then I saw the Tartan Amoebas in Edinburgh and realized how versatile of an instrument it can be. And in the hands of this band, it's phenomenal. I've never heard a band so completely control this instrument as well as blend it in with bass guitars and horns, especially so on "Funky...

3.0 out of 5 stars Bagpipes will never be the same again
The Tartan Amoebas bringing your the funkiest renderings of the sounds of Scotland ever digitally immortalised. The Blues Brothers meet Braveheart in the opening 'Funky Bagpipies'. The rest is composed of traditional tunes delivered with a great brass section. When the Amoeabas put on a thrash at the Edinburgh Festival it's Brigadoon on speed !

Get this album and sit back to enjoy a rollicking good time. Now, how do we get this band to the States?

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it, love it, love it!, December 1, 2007
This review is from: Tartan Amoebas (Audio CD)
I was introduced to this great album when my daughter's highland teacher used "Pinch of Snuff" for a choreography (think Highland goes line dancing, cowboy hats and all. It worked fabulously thanks to the Amoebas). This disc was the most wonderful thing I'd heard since disocovering Capercaille. The arrangements are fresh, eclectic and imaginative. I would love to know who "Miss Stewart" is. She must be one hot gal to have inspired such a great tune. Definitely need to get the rest of the TA collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funky Celtic with Horns, July 23, 2009
This review is from: Tartan Amoebas (MP3 Download)
This is a really fun album - it's all up-tempo celtic music with mariachi horns mixed in with the bagpipes :).

I admit that does sound a bit weird but the first time I heard it I was struck by how well it all hung together and when I bought the CD I discovered that there's pretty much no filler.

In addition it's got a very funky feel to it as well - the bass player has been listening to James Brown and Sly Stone on the side ;).

I think my personal favorite track is Julie Delaney/Tommy's Tarbuckle/Drowsy Maggie/etc, not sure why but the fiddle and the horns seem to blend well here, and there's some very good fiddle and bagpipe solos.

Anyway, check out the samples, look at the reviews and if you like celtic music or if you like music from bands like the Afro Celt Sound System you'll like this one.
