Book Description

October 2006
This is the remarkable story of Donald Caskie, minister of the Scots Kirk in Paris at the time of the German invasion of France in 1940. Although he had several opportunities to flee, Caskie stayed behind to help establish a network of safe houses and escape routes for Allied soldiers and airmen trapped in occupied territory. This was dangerous work, and despite the constant threat of capture and execution, Caskie showed enormous resourcefulness and courage as he aided thousands of servicemen to freedom. Finally arrested and interrogated, he was sentenced to death at a Nazi show-trial, and it was only through the intervention of a German pastor that he was saved. After the war, Caskie returned to the Scots Kirk, where he served as minister until 1960. This inspiring story of selfless commitment to others in the face of extreme adversity is the legacy of a truly brave man.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slightly biased review from a distant relative, November 14, 2001

The Rev Dr. Donald Caskie was not a novelist, but he wrote well and he lived a remarkable life. The first half of this book is the story of how he, as a leader of the Church of Scotland in occupied France, operated part of an "underground railway" to rescue Allied POWs and get them to safe ground. The situations he describes are scary, funny, and profound. The last half of the book takes a very different turn (spoiler). I am ordering the book now from Amazon because I haven't read it in a while, but I recall quite a few spiritual passages while he was in prison. He simply tried to live his life and be the man he was under terrible circumstances. Maybe 40 or more years ago there was a movie made of this book, and there was an announcement last year that the BBC would be doing a new mini-series of the story, but I haven't seen it yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Tartan Pimpernel., December 9, 2010

This review is from: The Tartan Pimpernel (Paperback)
The author of this book was a personal friend of my mother. He was an absolute hero. What distressed me most was that the British Government only awarded him the O.B.E. The Queen was dishing out O.B.E's to pop stars and the like who did nothing to deserve that honour. A truly wonderful book. If there were more men like Donald Caskie the world would be a better place.
