Not funny,
By
This review is from: Tartuffe (Broadway Theatre Archive) (DVD)
I have come to expect a lot from Broadway Theatre Archive. They save the best, I thought. However, this is defintely not the best version of Tartuffe that I have seen. I first saw it onstage, presented by the Trinity Square Reperatory Company in Providence, Rhode Island. The audience, including me, laughed so much we almost fell out of our seats. But, this version, unfortunately, is boring. If you want to see a really funny version, watch the BBC filmed version of the Royal Shakepeare Company's production of Tartuffe. It's a great laugh!

So Wonderful It Can Make You Cry,
This review is from: Tartuffe (Broadway Theatre Archive) (DVD)
This performance is so stunning, so wonderful. There is not a poor part in it nor is there a poor part played here. The so-called saucy-tongued maid is stupdendously well-acted by Patricia Elliott and her character is a fount of wisdom, reason and practicality as well as self-esteem and bravery, not just a source for laughter. All the other characters, by comparison, seem knaves however discriminating and virtuous) is the wife played by Tammy Grimes, though the most knavish of all the characters is, of course, the hypocrite Tartuffe played by Donald Moffat of "Clear and Present Danger" fame. Tammy Grimes plays her part well especially in the scheme to reveal Tartuffe as an ill-intentioned plotter. And while the daughter and her lover (played by a very young and gorgeous Victor Garber) may have appeared stiff or stilted at times, their lines were uttered with utter singularity of clarity and their timing was never maligned by such an appearance. It was a joy to hear such wit and such reason uttered with clarity and precision and rhyme. We live in such a witless and inarticulate age now no matter how popular the rapper, the contrast between our time and that of Moliere's can make you cry. The crimes may all be the same and the foibles too, but the wit and the understanding of what's shown belong to a distant age much wiser than our own. Richard Wilbur's translation is magnificent. Without him, we would be forced to read Moliere in French. Mon Dieu!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Tartuffe (Broadway Theatre Archive) (DVD)
I purchased this video to show my college Fundamentals of Theatre Class I. The students vary in age and theatre experience, but they all enjoyed this production.
