5.0 out of 5 stars Narration of a Masterpiece, June 25, 2000
By
This review is from: Tarzan (1999 Walt Disney Film) (Audio CD)
Phil Collins' soundtrack serves as a narration to Disney's most recent animated feature-film. Throughout the movie his songs reveal the emotions behind Tarzan's difficult childhood and the turmoil that comes when he discovers other humans. The music stands well alone. From the percussion-laden opening track, "Two Worlds," evoking the mood of the storm that shipwrecks Tarzan's parents; to Glenn Close's touching rendition of "You'll Be in My Heart;" to the hopeful, upbeat "Son of Man;" to the playful "Trashin' the Camp," the music is a comprehensive album - fast, slow, percussive, instrumental, vocal - in itself as well as an impressive counterpart to Disney's equally impressive animation. Mark Mancina's score is as lush as the jungle it accompanies; the album's only fault is that it does not include more of the score. A number of "Phil versions" of the soundtrack songs are included, amongst them, 'N Sync and Collins' a cappella version of "Trashin' the Camp" and Collins' Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning version of "You'll Be in My Heart." This album was highly praised by reviewers, industry critics, and fans alike. Collins recorded it in five languages to accompany the movie overseas. It is extremely approachable; one need not be a Collins fan to enjoy this album.
