Editorial Reviews

Disney's legendary adventure is better than ever as TARZAN bursts onto Blu-ray for the first time ever with spectacular picture and amazing sound. Filled with thrills, laughs, and Academy Award(R)-winning music (Best Music, Original Song, "You'll Be In My Heart," 1999), this family favorite will make you go wild. Disney's magnificent adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' story begins deep within the jungle when baby Tarzan is adopted by a family of gorillas. But his "Two Worlds" collide with the arrival of humans, forcing Tarzan to choose between a "civilized" life with the beautiful Jane and the life he shares with his fun-loving friends and his gorilla family. Enjoy this wild and wonderful adventure in a whole new way on Disney Blu-ray!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tarzan is Much More Than the Cover Describes June 7, 2014
One of the benefits of belonging to the Disney Movie Club, is the ability to get movies before their intended release dates. I just got Tarzan blu ray in the mail this morning, and I wasn't expecting more than the movie and the few paltry extras listed on the packaging. Well imagine my surprise when I popped the disc in and found that it apparently includes all of the material from the long out of print 2 DVD set from years ago!! Someone can check me on this, as I no longer own that set, but this seems to be everything I remember. With this blu ray release you get an improved picture with beautiful colors and clear animation lines, a robust DTS 5.1 soundtrack, and all of these extras.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie - But Flawed Audio! February 4, 2000
The movie is great, I like it at home as much as I did in the theater, BUT...There appears to be a glitch with the sound. The front left and rear right audio channel is SWITCHED. Disney is aware of this problem (on 1.5 million disks) and isn't doing ANYTHING about it!

5.0 out of 5 stars How to make a gem without violence! November 30, 1999
Technically, this movie is perfect. Great songs, beautifully designed scenarios, endearable funny characters and a strong feeling of nostalgia for movies that aim to a higher message. Regretfully, whoever is a parent these days is having a lot of trouble to explain the violence shown in cartoons to their sons. Moreover, it's hard to endorse any t.v. cartoons other than Pinky and the Brain or history related ones. Tarzan demonstrates that there is such thing such as a Family Film and that you can create visually stunning gems as this movie and, still, send a message other than gross scenes or blood and guts spilled all over. Thank you, Disney.

5.0 out of 5 stars From Idianapolis.. Great Movie November 20, 1999
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
I have to say that the person from Chicago is way to analytical! This is a childrens movie without a doubt.. Take it from a mother that is very protective of the tv programs that her children watch.. This was very animated and there was no gross violence that all the new cartoons these days have in it.. It was a love story, a frienship story, a happy and a sad story. As an adult, I loved it and highly reccomend it for you and your children. It is something that you can sit down as a family and enjoy together.. Try not to analyze this movie, just enjoy it, it's great!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great DVD Features, Annoying Forced Previews February 1, 2000
The Tarzan DVD has a nice Storybook reading feature and some other bonuses, but also has an extremely RUDE feature: When you first start the DVD, Disney shows you 3 minutes of previews before launching the main menu. No fastforwarding or skipping allowed! What a dumb way to cheapen an otherwise great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie ruined by Previews Again February 1, 2000
By Alan H
Tarzan is yet another wonderful animated masterpiece from our friends at Disney. It has one of the most memorable soundtracks in recent history (thanks to the wonderful work of Phil Collins).
This wonderful family entertainment now available on DVD is severely tainted by a trend Disney started on their VHS format, and have now extended to the DVD format. What I speak of is previews at the beginning of the movie. This DVD has over 5 minutes of previews at the beginning before you get to the DVD menu which allows you to start the movie... Because of the way they have done this (as part of the Title sequence) you cannot skip to the menu, you have to live through them (luckily fast forward still works).
My complaint, coming from a household with small children (together with over 90% of the purchasers of this DVD) they really hate having to sit through the preview to watch their movie. (Two year olds are expecially prone to screaming until the movie starts...).
I can only hope that they will reconsider this poor trend, and rely upon other medium to sell their future releases.

1.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Video but Sloppy Audio Work on DVD February 4, 2000
By A Customer
It was my first time to watch the Disney-rendition of this movie. Overall, it was fun and exciting to watch; especially recommended for kids...just don't encourage them to go near a gorilla, though. The video technicals were as awesome as I expect them to be (two thumbs up!). Somebody in the recording studio made a sloppy sound recording on the DVD, though: (a) No sub-woofer recording (WATCHOUT, it's only 5.0 and NOT 5.1) (b) Some left and right sounds were mixed-up. I'd recommend this only for the curious and not for the serious DVD collectors. Otherwise, just rent it.
