One of the benefits of belonging to the Disney Movie Club, is the ability to get movies before their intended release dates. I just got Tarzan blu ray in the mail this morning, and I wasn't expecting more than the movie and the few paltry extras listed on the packaging. Well imagine my surprise when I popped the disc in and found that it apparently includes all of the material from the long out of print 2 DVD set from years ago!! Someone can check me on this, as I no longer own that set, but this seems to be everything I remember. With this blu ray release you get an improved picture with beautiful colors and clear animation lines, a robust DTS 5.1 soundtrack, and all of these extras.

The Tarzan DVD has a nice Storybook reading feature and some other bonuses, but also has an extremely RUDE feature: When you first start the DVD, Disney shows you 3 minutes of previews before launching the main menu. No fastforwarding or skipping allowed! What a dumb way to cheapen an otherwise great product.

The movie is great, I like it at home as much as I did in the theater, BUT...There appears to be a glitch with the sound. The front left and rear right audio channel is SWITCHED. Disney is aware of this problem (on 1.5 million disks) and isn't doing ANYTHING about it!

Technically, this movie is perfect. Great songs, beautifully designed scenarios, endearable funny characters and a strong feeling of nostalgia for movies that aim to a higher message. Regretfully, whoever is a parent these days is having a lot of trouble to explain the violence shown in cartoons to their sons. Moreover, it's hard to endorse any t.v. cartoons other than Pinky and the Brain or history related ones. Tarzan demonstrates that there is such thing such as a Family Film and that you can create visually stunning gems as this movie and, still, send a message other than gross scenes or blood and guts spilled all over. Thank you, Disney.

After publicizing this release as a 2 disc set, disney finally changed its mind and released it as a barebones single disc. Those who were waiting to get all those great behind the scenes stuff available previously on "tarzan 2 disc collector's edition" will be thoroughly disappointed with this release.

However, those who missed out on previous 2 disc collector's edition and want to own tarzan on a two disc set, still have the option of buying it from amazon.co.uk, where it has been released as a 2-disc special edition with all those behind the scenes stuff from previous collector's edition. Just make sure you have a multi-region dvd player which plays discs from all regions.

Do not buy this unless you just want to own the film. Better still search for the old collector's edition. It will be worth all the money spent.

I have to say that the person from Chicago is way to analytical! This is a childrens movie without a doubt.. Take it from a mother that is very protective of the tv programs that her children watch.. This was very animated and there was no gross violence that all the new cartoons these days have in it.. It was a love story, a frienship story, a happy and a sad story. As an adult, I loved it and highly reccomend it for you and your children. It is something that you can sit down as a family and enjoy together.. Try not to analyze this movie, just enjoy it, it's great!

The one star I give is because of this version, not the movie itself. THE SOUND IS FAULTY! The left front and rear speaker merge the sound. If you already have purchased this movie I suggest starting it at 31:00 and you will hear the gunshot, noticibly flawed. The thing is, Disney has admitted to the mistake yet comments this does not warrant a recall? Sorry, but if I buy a shirt and it has even a tiny hole, I'm going to want to exchange it for one without the hole. And that exchange should not bring about an argument with the reseller. Disney apparantly does not feel the same way....
For those who have not bought this movie already, WAIT AND THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL EDITION COMING OUT IN APRIL WITH THE MISTAKE CORRECTED. The mistake will also obviously be corrected in future pressings of this edition, but with 700,000 already pressed you would not be able to know if you were getting a 'good' copy. The special edition will also have more extras that so many people have complained the previous Disney releases ignored.
On a brighter side, the movie itself I would rate a 5. The distorted noise doesn't make the movie unwatchable...you just feel cheated. One last comment to a previous response who said that the sound was bad because it was 5.0 instead of 5.1: this is how it was released in theaters as well; it is not a mistake or way of cutting the cost.
