I was surprised by how light the unit was, and it initially concerned me. But the DR-05 is an exceptional recorder. It is sturdy and well built. Buttons respond well. Adjust the settings correctly and it can record very high-quality audio. Downloading to the computer is easy. The included memory card can hold well over 30 hours of MP3 recordings. And the USB port doubles as an external power source (to provide external power you will need a USB cable that plugs into some powered USB hub).
You can plug an external microphone into the unit. Also, you can listen with headphones to what is being recorded while it is recording.
This unit can record in multiple formats, from MP3 to WAV, each at various quality levels. The display shows how much time you can record at any given setting.
With respect to the extras in this package, they are terribly cheap. The tripod is flimsy and only minimally usable. The cords work fine. The headphones are ultra-cheap.

I bought this to upgrade from using a voice recorder for home recording of musical sounds/instruments. So far, the unit has surpassed my expectations. The microphones are great at picking up just the desired sounds-- and the record function allows for a good variance in range. The unit is less suited for straight-ahead field recordings than for more directional/directed/focused sounds.
To retrieve the sounds from the unit, just plug in the USB. An instant response, and you cut and paste right onto your computer.
Sound quality is no problem, as various lossless formats are included. And a built in memory-card expands your saving capacity quite a bit.
I am really impressed with this product, especially given its price. Recommended.

I use this for recording my band's gigs, and the sound quality is awesome. I recommend it to anyone who has reason to use a handheld music recording device. Also, the other stuff in the set is generally pretty junky, but for me, it was the same price with or without them, so it does not effect my scoring.
