Product Description

The DP-03 is the latest Portastudio in TASCAM’s 37-year progression of making recording simple and affordable for musicians. The 8-track digital recorder captures your music at CD quality to affordable SD/SDHC cards, and a 2GB card is included with the recorder. With built-in microphones, effects, mastering and CD burning, the DP-03 provides everything musicians need to record and share their music. A pair of stereo condenser microphones is built into the front panel of the DP-03, helpful for capturing a rehearsal, live performance or songwriting ideas. Also included are a pair of high-quality XLR microphone preamps with phantom power for condenser microphones. 1/4” line inputs are also available, and an instrument-level switch allows you to record a guitar or bass without a direct box. A three-button footswitch, the RC-3F, is available for control and punch in. Routing the inputs to one of the eight tracks is simple, and you can record two at a time until you fill up all eight. A tuner and metronome are built-in for tight-sounding tracks, each with its own dedicated button for quick access. Track can be edited with commands like copy/paste, silence, clone track and undo. Bouncing is also available, even bouncing all eight tracks down to one or two. There’s even the option to import a recording through USB or audio CD. Each track has its own send to a stereo reverb processor as well as two-band shelving EQ. Once you’ve perfected your mix with the 45mm faders, pan knobs, reverb and EQ, record it to the dedicated stereo master track. Your mix can be processed with mastering effects like EQ and limiting for a tight, modern sound. When you’re satisfied, transfer your mix to a computer over USB 2.0 or burn an audio CD.

I bought this recently and was recording right out of the box within minutes. I previously owned a Boss recorder that was similar but I was looking for a few more tracks and the CD burner, and this was priced right. The external mics are good and all the knobs are seemingly well made.

I'm no pro musician. I just like to bang around a bit and sing and play with a few close friends and every so often I'll make a few recordings, and this does everything I want it to and most importantly, it makes us sound 10 times better than we really are!!!

My one beef, and this was also true of the Boss unit, was the lack of storage space on the memory card. If I go through the whole process of recording, mixing down, and then mastering, you really only have space for 5-6 songs before you have to off-load to a PC or burn a disc. So it's not the type of thing that you can just turn on and record a practice session.

(Additional Note: Since I did this original review, I went out and bought a larger 32G memory card ($35) and now the limitation on memory has ceased to exist. Plenty of room to record songs)

I love the portability and ease of use and the memory is a trade-off that I am more than willing to make.

I bought this unit because I wanted to record my original songs and liked that it has a built in CD burner.

In the beginning, I thought this thing was awesome.

I started out recording basic tracks, and everything worked great, and I really thought this was an amazing little unit. But as a I became more familiar with all the features of this recorder, and began to utilize them to make more sophisticated songs is when the problems started.

The first problem was with the CD burner itself. This thing seems to have problems mounting CDs. I've tried many brands to little avail. If you're able to mount a CD, cross your fingers because there's a good chance you'll get a "writing failed" message. I also began to find that with my more sophisticated songs the CDs I would burn would skip. Brand new, unblemished CDs just burned- the songs would skip. Not huge skips, just mini skips in different spots in the song each listen.

After about six months with the unit I began to encounter the "SD write busy, please power off" message. This would happen about two minutes into the recording of a track. So not only would I lose what I'd been recording on that specific track, but because of the nature of this unit, anything I'd recorded during that particular session would be lost as well. The DP-03 doesn't write what you record onto the SD card until the unit is powered off. So if you make the mistake of unplugging the unit without powering off you will lose everything you recorded during that particular session.

The "SD write busy" message started happening periodically during my recording at first, but now happens every time I record a track for more than two minutes at a time which essentially makes it useless.

I purchased this at SamAsh this past Spring, and I absolutely love this.It was worth every penny and I truly believe this could pay for itself someday. It's easy to use and it has many nice features on it.
The only thing I didn't like was the material it's made of.I was hoping it would be made out of something a bit more sturdy, but it feels kind of plastic like. It has a little weight to it,but not much.
Other than that, this is definitely a Singer-Songwriter's best friend.

Don't believe the hype of the other reviewers that wrote how flimsy the buttons and plastic casing is, and how it only records one song to a CD. Its all lies ladies and gentlemen. Complete concoctions from a shot of scotch and a couple NAMM vids.

Its build is of that of a laptop but not as delicate. That same hard plastic shell. And why not, it has a CD burner inside! The buttons and the sliders feel like heaven. And I'm saying that coming from a DP-01 since 2002. That's right. 11 long years with the DP01 so I know Tascam is quality. And I started on a PortaStudio 414 back in the nineties. Anyway, the DP-01 feels like a toy compared to this (minus the HD, the DP-03 isn't equipped with a 40 GB HD, just SD cards to increase recording time). The sliders feel real good and rubbery and the sliding has a pretty pro standard feel unlike the DP-01 which has a plasticy feel. Buttons feel even more sturdier too. These buttons, I can really finger stomp them.

Its a beautiful looking machine too in black matte and chrome trimmings.

You can burn multiple songs on to a CD. In fact, there's an option to gap the time between songs. I keep it at zero for no gaps.

The sound is uncompressed 16 bit at 44.1 kHz. Which is CD standard quality and gives tunes a vintage sound.

My only gripe is that these didn't include SPDIF out like its elder DPs. With the DP-01, I used to connect the L and R outputs to my monitors and record into the CD recorder with the Digital Out. I was able to see clipping on the dB meter of the CD recorder.
