The TASCAM has changed my lo-techie musical life forever. I would never have purchased or even known about the device if it weren't for my friend, who owns one. I always find reading the instruction manual to be useful, but if you're a member of the opposite sex (re: male) you probably have no use for manuals. Two things you need to know, as a musician utilizing this crystal-clear recording device: always make sure the Input is On (under Menu -> Others -> Monitor Mix -> Input -> On) ANNNND, If you can't seem to figure out why the attached speaker(/mic) won't work for playback, you must have Speaker turned On (Menu -> Speaker -> On) AND the Input must be Off. It's also worth noting that you can add effects to the file you're recording; I haven't tried adding effects post-facto to the hard copy yet. To include an effect with your file, go to Menu -> Others -> Effect -> On -> -down- Preset -> choose preset -> -down- -> Level -> (15 is good :) -down- Source -> Output 9very important--Source: Input only allows you to hear the effect via the device and does not include it in the actual file.
A good recording level for single or dual acoustic guitars for example, starts about 54 (recording level can only be set during recording). If you're using it to spy on your boss at work, your chinos might make the volume peak out, which will only muffle the sound. Outdoor jam sessions are also prone to light breezes, which apparently also have the chino effect ><
This is probably a terrible product review for an above-awesome product, but don't let that deter you from picking one up. You don't have to buy the more expensive model to get great MP3s (I prefer 192K) or .WAV 16/24 bit files. Enjoy!
