This deck can record on USB thumb drives to 64 Gb, SD to 2 Gb, SDHC to 32 Gb and CF cards up to 64 Gb in formats including WAV files at 44.1 or 48 KHz at 16 bits resolution, and MP3 format from 64 kb to 320 kb per second. The dynamic range and S/N ratio are 95 db, and Distortion is under .005%. It even accepts a standard computer keyboard for control and title entry. My use of audio recorders has spanned from Cassette tape and reel to reel, to digital using DAT or a sound card in a computer. This deck blows all the earlier systems away. The RS-100 differs from the RS-200 in having only unbalanced RCA audio inuts and outputs, the R200 is for more professional use and includes XLR balanced inputs and outputs, both RS-100 and RS-200 also have digital inputs and outputs via coaxial connectors. An inexpensive converter will allow TOSLINK digital optical conversion to coaxial digital connectors for these decks. I use the digital optical output from my DAT recorder for direct digital input to the RS-100. The other deck available in this line costs over double the price of the RS-100 and adds a CD recorder which can record CD-DA or MP3 files. I would recommend the CD RW900SL as a separate unit if you must have recording to CD capabilities, you save a few hundred dollars, and if the CD drive dies at some point you don't have to worry about removing the primary recording unit from your system. The limited size of the CD (about 700 Mb) means that you will probably only use it to record CDs for your vehicle. Archiving that vinyl, cassette, reel to reel or DAT music would best be done to USB thumb drives, or SDHC memory cards.

The only negative thing I can think of, is that the remote is wired, so you do have to worry about unit placement.

The service by Amazon.com as a international transaction was superb - even with paying import duties (You have to do this at time of purchase) still was £100+ cheaper than any UK supplier! Ordered on the Sunday from the states arrived Wednesday in UK. The product is quite specialist and 'the budget' model in a range of 3. Its application is really for studio use ideal for 'quick' recordings and/or conversion to MP3/Wav of audio input. I bought this after seeing it used at the BBC for speech/phone calls/ short series play. There is no onboard 'hard drive' recordings need to be made directly to USB/SD/Compact Flash cards (not Included)- -Compact flash cards are still my preferred media but seldom included on equipment these days. The unit is multi voltage so buying from the states is no problem works fine in UK (with alternative kettle lead!) - It is well built and of course compact - Im not a great fan of the wired remote - but in a fixed studio application it is fine. love the illuminated buttons. I would have preferred a green backlight display - the blue never seems sharp enough for me - but that is a personal issue. Great bit of kit for the right application - for home use it might be over complicated and other domestic items might be best - for gigging might be an overkill on the road - it seems in the gigging world Minidisc is still king!
