This review is from: Tasco Red Dot 1 x 42 Matte Red/Green 5 MOA dot (Sports)
Pros - This sight is easy to mount, comes with see thru lens covers, and is allot larger than the 30mm model.
-It holds up the the recoil of my AR15 so it meets my requirements for durability. -I can see through the red dot scope with my flip up iron sights. I would prefer to mount the scope 1/4-1/2" higher to improve the sight picture through the iron sights. -The body of the sight is about the same width as my AR15. Any larger and the red dot would take a beating. Cons - There are only 5 settings for each color of dot (red or green). In bright sunlight, you have to use the highest setting to see the dot clearly. The first setting would only be useable in night or very dark conditions. - The on/off is also the brightness knob. - There isn't an auto off feature so don't forget to turn it off or your battery will die. -At 50m, the dot size is roughly 2" in size on the target. This means that at 200m you probably wouldn't see an 8" target because the dot is too big.

I purchased this for my Remington 870 12 ga. I hunt whitetails at short range (30-100 yards), and wanted something that was a step up from open sights.
This sight (not a scope - there is no magnification) does a great job for what I need. It is an excellent solution for those of us hunting in a dark blind where you may not be able to see open sights in certain light conditions. Target acquisition is quick and easy because of the lack of magnification - I don't bird hunt, but this would probably be a nice upland bird sight as well. If the dot is blurry, you've got the intensity set too high. Back it off a click or two and it makes a world of difference. The dot has to have some width in order for you to see it. If your target will be at a distance over 100 yards, this is NOT the sight for you. Search out a true scope with magnification, rangefinding, and mil-dots to increase your accuracy. I'm not sure how other reviewers had a problem mounting this to a Weaver base. Mine bolted right up to a Weaver-brand mount, Weaver part number 48340. It will clamp on to the base in the same manner Weaver-brand scope rings do. So far, I've put 15 rounds of Remington 3" mag Copper Solid sabots through the 870 with this sight mounted, and it shows no sign of losing accuracy or falling apart. These rounds have serious recoil, and the sight seems durable enough for the task.

I purched this red dot scope for a 9mm carbine since the first red dot I owned was a Tasco 40mm and it works perfectly to this day after 12 years. This unit however, is not the same quality. The red dot turns off with the slightest bump, not to mention recoil. I cleaned up all the contacts in the battery chamber and it helped but did not compleatly eliminate the issue. i will not buy anouther with out testing it first in person at point of sale.

Got to try out this item Dec. 31 for the first time. Not sure what problem but will not work as described. Will try new batteries to see if that is the problem.Very unsatisfied thus far and may return if batteries do not fix the problem. No dot visiable either color..

For the price, this is an easy to set up and use product for a plinking rifle. I mounted this on a Ruger 10/22 that I've had since early 80s but haven't shot in years. This scope is a great enhancement over the stock sights that my eyes just can't quite focus on nowadays. The view is fairly broad and it's easy to find the dot. At the brightest/largest setting, the dot will cover a rather large area at 30 yards. Out of the box, my unit had the dot too far to the left and by the time it was centered, the adjustment screw was getting very tight and most likely at the end of the adjustment range (yes, the mounts were centered with the barrel). Overall, this is a reasonably priced and functional product for the application I purchased it for.

Good buy for the money. I would give this item 5 stars but have trouble keeping the dot on.
After a couple of shots it turns itself off. I checked the upper battery connections on the range and they seened snug enough. I have not had an oppertunity to investigate further. While the mount will fit propery on a standard Pickitinny rail, I cannot get both anchor points on my MGM Contender mount.

I was attracted to this sight because of the 40mm size.
The Good: Works well at an indoor range or in the shade. Holds zero when changing color or dot size. Wide view. The Bad: The downside of this sight is that in sun you see multiple dots. Seems there must be lots of internal reflections. When using the red dot I can also see two green ones, slightly less bright. When using the green dot I see multiples. Very distracting and something that should have been caught in design. Probably never took it outside to test it! |
