A New Friend Named Tashi,
By Debnance at Readerbuzz (Alvin, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tashi (Tashi series) (Paperback)
A 1001 CBYMRBYGU. Jack announces to his parents that he has a new friend named Tashi. His parents probe the boy to find out about the friend, but, to the boy's dismay, the dad always asks the wrong questions. Jack tells incredible tales about Tashi. A fun story written with intermittent pictures to lead an early chapter book reader through the story. I liked this book. Jack and Tashi sat at the kitchen table, drinking their juice. "Would you like to play in the garden now?" asked Mum. "Oh, yes!" said Tashi. "I like gardens." "We could look for a dragon to kill," Jack said hopefully to Tashi. "Are there any dragons left in the garden?" asked Dad. "You always say the wrong thing!" said Jack.

These are excellent books for emerging readers, especially for boys (though I like them too!). The stories (2 to a book) are action-packed, with a large pencil drawing on every page, along with 3-5 sentences of text. They look more like "chapter books" than early readers, so that is a plus for those chilren who feel more "grown up" than they are. My first-grade son can read many of the words himself, but does need some help from us on some of the longer words. The stories have the feel of fairy tales, as Tashi tells his friend Jack (with whom the kids identify, as he's a relatively typical kid) about all his amazing adventures with giants, princesses, war lords, ogres, etc. We've bought six books so far and plan to read more.
