Book Description

February 2, 2012
During the age of Olympos, when a vengeful goddess shatters the Sacred Scales, both immortals and humans alike suffer. Apollo, the god of truth, goes from a glorious existence as The Shining One to a victim of Zeus’ wrath, and his journey makes him question his godhood, his role in the cosmos, and his views on humanity. Prophecy and the Fates direct his course, and he must make difficult, yet vital, choices. Millennia pass, and Dan, Aleta, Brandon, and Sarah—four reluctant modern-day heroes gifted by ancient civilizations born of the gods—bound by prophecy, have to choose whether or not to save their world when it could mean they never existed. They must master their new powers while battling against incomprehensible forces from the Underworld and repairing the Sacred Scales, destroyed long ago. With the equilibrium between Order and Chaos unhinged, and the Olympian gods struggling to exist, these four must ally themselves with the United Nations to protect an endangered world, becoming the only group who can fight against metaphysical threats to the Earth, forging Task Force: Gaea. Can mortals succeed where gods cannot go?

"Task Force Gaea: Finding Balance" by David Berger is an excellent novel that would fit comfortably on the shelf between "The Watchmen" by Alan Moore and the works of Homer translated by Robert Fagles.

According to the prefatory matter of the book the author blends his love of mythology, especially of the ancient Greeks, with the story-telling style of comic books to create a contemporary work of his own.

As Alan Moore extended the super-hero genre of comic books into the remarkable graphic novel "The Watchmen" Berger has used the same tradition in comics to create his novel that presents conflicts of the ancient Greek gods and goddesses and show how those conflicts have down-stream effects upon our world.

In the book we see: 1) A team of super-heroes formed to protect our world when those down-stream effects manifest themselves in our time. 2) An explanation of how it can be that the stories of the ancient Greek gods and goddesses is true but we have no experience of them. 3) A very interesting story element in which all men and women have two contradictory destinies due to the actions of the gods and goddesses.

The novel presents a strong theme of environmentalism. Gaea is the earth goddess and primary object of adoration throughout the book among our heroes and heroines. We see that human assaults upon the natural environment, an evil in itself, becomes a threat to the survival of the human species itself as we take liberties with the survival of all life on Earth.

The comic book tone of this intelligent book has made a fan of this reader. I believe the book will appeal to readers of all types, especially to fans of comic books, mythology, and environmental issues.

I started reading the book and wasn't sure how I would like it as it was not my usual genre of books...i.e. mystery or romance...but I found I couldn't stop reading....it really captured my interest and I didn't want to put it down...guess I have a new genre...Task Force: Gaea: Finding Balance (Volume 1)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Storytelling March 16, 2013
Format:Paperback
I have always admired writing that takes well trodden themes and character archetypes and finds new ways to make them interesting. David Berger certainly achieves this in volume one of his series. My interest in Greek mythology has always been cursory at best. However, this story was so interesting that I found myself researching the mythology while I was reading the book. I was so invested in the world created by Berger that I just had to know more and see where he took his inspiration from.

I love good storytelling. The actual subject of a story is secondary in my opinion. How you tell your story and your passion for it are the most important aspects of writing to me. A fantastic story can be ruined if put in the wrong hands. While reading this wonderfully thought-out story and the detailed characters (My favorite being Brandon Jeffries A.K.A. ZODIAK.) that make up Task Force: Gaea the passion of the storyteller was more than evident.

I am eagerly anticipating volume two of this excellent series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible! September 4, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'll admit I was a bit skeptical going into this book, since many books I read that are self-published are in need of a good editor. However about 10 pages in that skepticism was pushed aside. The book sucked me in like I haven't been in some time. I loved the non-linear storytelling and the intermingling of mythology with our world. Another plus is that much of it takes place in Boston, which are my stomping grounds. Just a great first time effort and I eagerly await the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Different Approach to Mythology July 23, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have always enjoyed authors who have put their own spin on well-known fairy tales and legends. In his Task Force: Gaea, David Berger truly delivers an original view of Greek mythology with a modern twist. Comic book meets Mount Olympus as the present meets the past in this fascinating novel. The mythological aspect comes through as well-researched and incredibly realistic, blending believably into a modern-day myth. The characters are dynamic, growing before our eyes and bringing the reader along on their personal and literal journeys. The plot is complex enough to keep me engaged with an interesting twist that really brings things together. If you're looking for a book that is at times pensive, at times action-packed, and will stay with you even after you have finished, consider reading Task Force: Gaea: Finding Balance.

4.0 out of 5 stars An exciting and promising debut April 6, 2012
Format:Paperback
A captivating story of four ordinary mortals (well, one not-so-ordinary mortal and three others) bestowed with powers to help protect the Earth from terrors from the world of myth. Think Edith Hamilton meets Ray Harryhausen meets The Justice League, and you'll have something like Task Force: Gaea. Very much looking forward to the next instalment!
