A pleasant surprise - practical goal setting for teens and young adults, November 1, 2010
This review is from: A Taste-Berry Teen's Guide to Setting and Achieving Goals (Taste Berries for Teens) (Paperback)
Discovered this book doing research to stay current on goal setting and achievement for my workshops and our goal planning software. The name made me laugh and I confess, I checked out the book more from curiosity about the title than because I thought it would be a good resource. I honestly thought (erroneously) it might turn out to be childish, shallow or even a cartoon and was pleasantly surprised by its clarity, depth and presentation.
A well targeted and well written book for teens who're looking for how to discover their purposes in life and then how to pursue and achieve them effectively. Dr. Youngs and her daughter are both sharp ladies. With just a little more investigation I see they walk their talk.
Most chapters include questionairres with open-ended questions designed to encourage readers to look inside themselves and discover their talents, skills, aptitudes and desires. The questions fit teens well. I recall asking and answering many of the same ones when I was in high school.
Dr. Youngs and her daughter use real teen stories to demonstrate how adolescents (and some adults) with many differing bents discovered their inate selves and pursued life goals that allowed them to make a living while pursuing their passions and making a positive difference in the world in the process.
I'd like my children to read this book. Now that I re-read what I've written, I'm doing the book a disservice. Many adults could use a dose of this book.
