Book Description

Avalon Mystery February 2003
Cedar Hill sounds like the perfect place for Maggie to write her math puzzle book--a small New Hampshire town whose biggest problem should be keeping roads to the adjacent ski slopes clear of snow. The first town meeting, however, proves otherwise. Bitter arguments break out over Jack Warwick's proposal to buy the financially-struggling ski resort and turn it into a granite mine. Maggie thinks she can keep out of it all, until Jack drops dead of poison and her childhood friend becomes the prime suspect.

As Maggie investigates, she soon finds there were many who wished Jack dead. Which one of them acted on it, though, and planted evidence pointing to her friend? Maggie struggles to find out, before time runs out, and before the killer decides to give her A Taste of Death.

From Booklist

Maggie Olenski, a children's book author and amateur sleuth, heads for picturesque Cedar Hill, New Hampshire, to complete a book and do a little skiing. Within hours of arriving, she and friend Dyna Hall witness an acrimonious town meeting concerning the conversion of a ski resort to a granite mine. When the mine's developer is murdered and a friend of Maggie and Dyna's becomes the prime suspect, Maggie launches her own investigation. Hughes capably combines elements of both cozy and environmental mysteries. The characters are engaging, the plot has more twists than a tough ski slope, and there is plenty of cozy ambience, thanks to a charming cat, much attention to food, and the ski resort setting. Fans of Diane Mott Davidson's Goldy Bear series or Leslie Meier's Lucy Stone novels should add this series to their lists. John Rowen

More About the Author

I've always loved to write, and I also, when there was time, enjoyed dabbling in various crafts. With my Craft Corner mystery series I'm able to do both! Jo McAllister, protagonist of Wreath of Deception, String of Lies, and Paper-thin Alibi, owns an Arts and Crafts shop, and she gets to do all the fun things I've loved doing, only she does them better. But besides that she gets involved with murder -which I, happily, so far have not. Jo also lives in Maryland, as do I, but she was born there, whereas I was born and bred in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which gave me a fine appreciation of snow, bratwurst, and - on occasion - beer. My first two books, Resort to Murder and A Taste of Death featured a high school math teacher. I was never a teacher, (though they are in my family), so I sent my teacher on vacations which I could then vicariously enjoy, (and no one had to come to feed the cat.) While writing my Craft Corner books, I became quite knowlegeable about all things crafty - wreath-making, scrapbooking, beading, and more. I also became fairly knowledgeable in the ways of murder. And who knows how useful that may someday be?

4.0 out of 5 stars "a taste of death" by Mary Ellen Hughes, March 13, 2003

This is the author's second mystery novel. A delightful read. Mystery and suspense without blood and gore. Set in a small town in New Hampshire (you can feel the cold), a murder victim and lots of suspects. Maggie, the outsider, tries to help an old friend. I was getting to the end, anxious to find out who done it(I guessed wrong), but sorry the book would soon be done.

I enjoyed Mary Ellen Hughes' first book also - "Resort to Murder". Maggie's sleuthing career starts here.

I consider this book as very interesting and enjoyable reading. The story was well developed, kept the reader interested, did not get off track or onto uninteresting sidetracks, and had a very surprising ending. I think this book rates top honors.
