About the Author

Launched in 1993, Taste of Home is North America's most popular cooking magazine, with nearly 4 million paid subscribers. The delectable, practical recipes-more than 75 in each issue-are family favorites contributed by Taste of Home readers. The dishes, all beautifully photographed, capture special flavors of the season and are made with ingredients that home cooks are likely to have on hand or can readily find at a local supermarket. New recipe contests are announced every issue, and readers are encouraged to send their best recipes for Taste of Home's regular features, like A Complete Meal in a Matter of Minutes, Cooking for One or Two, My Mom's Best Meal, Super Snacks & Appetizers, and Just Desserts. The magazine's unique staff of field editors is made up of over 1,000 experienced home cooks located in each state and Canadian province, who regularly share recipes, well-liked menus and tips. Taste of Home is published six times a year.

If you want simple food made with common, easy-to-find ingredients, this cookbook and its predecessor fit the bill. The recipes that appear here are the winners from contests in which home cooks were asked to contribute their best dishes. So far I have made the Kielbasa Split Pea Soup and the Moist Chocolate Cake, and they both were quick and delicious. The book itself is sturdy and well-constructed, easy to keep clean, and its binder format makes it very convenient to use in the kitchen.

If you're looking for only sophisticated, healthful recipes that utilize primarily fresh ingredients, however, this cookbook might not suit you. Taste of Home often relies on canned soups, frozen potatoes, and other processed/prepared food. I usually skip over those dishes.

But there are 654 recipes here that generally manage to strike a good balance and that should appeal to the majority.

As a long time subscriber of Taste of Home magazines & owner of many of their cookbooks, I was looking forward to getting this 2nd edition of Winning Recipes-having already owned the original. It arrived today and I was extremely disappointed to see that it is nothing but a repackaging of old recipes found in any of their magazines or cookbooks. There is precious little new about it, despite the ALL NEW statement on the front cover. I will be sending the book back.....

I ordered this cookbook after so many friends recommended recipes from it. I checked it out from my library and found so many appealing things in it: good photos, easy to follow directions and a large variety of cooking ideas; some things on the downside are that only a few of the recipies have nutritional information and most of the serving sizes are very large, from 8-10 servings. That is good for church suppers but take some adjustment for smaller households.

The recipes in the book are clear and ingredients easy to find for the most part. I was disappointed in the quality of the book. The cover was flimsy and easily bent or torn. I don't see it holding up for more than a couple of years if it's used regularly. I also purchased Taste of Home "Best Loved Recipes" and it includes most of the recipes in this book plus many more. The "Best Loved Recipes" is not in a ringed binder, but it's much better made.
