Editorial Reviews

Review

When her family immigrates to the US, nine year-old Toya Reinhart is torn from her best friend Betina Bram. Much to the distress of her jealous twin, Tilly, Toya leaves a precious supply of cookies wrapped in her mother's handkerchief with Betina. Ten years later, both Toya and Betina are living in Texas and are still best friends, but Tilly's untimely death has caused problems. Because of a promise to her twin, Toya is engaged to Peter Stolz despite the fact that she loves Conrad Wagner. Betina loves Peter, but is seeing Conrad in the hope that it will make Peter and Toya jealous. As the book opens, this situation has been in status quo for three years. Conrad has problems of his own. His grandfather keeps wondering off. Opa, the grandfather, wanders about talking of flowers and frogs, but is still considered the wisest man in the village. After Conrad rescues Toya from a nearly disastrous fall down a well, he hires her to keep an eye on his grandfather. Conrad is busy with his farm, peach orchard, and beekeeping. The hero and heroine have some passionate moments, until news comes of a mysterious illness, a form of scurvy, which has afflicted the children of nearby German settlements. The race is on to find a cure and save the children, but suddenly, Betina and Toya's friendship is in peril. Can the two find a way to marry the men they love and repair their broken relationship, too? A Taste of Honey is the debut title of the newest Jove line about best friends. Each book must have a prologue showing the women as young girls. One of my main problems with this book was the overdone German accent that was mainly used to convey silly remarks about frogs, flowers, bees, and honey compared to sex. And when the children are in danger the urgency seemed strained because I didn't know any of the children -- they are just a faceless mass of strangers. It was a shame, because I would have liked to have had someone to worry about. As it was, this melodrama undercut any real emotion between the main characters. 4.0 out of 5 stars A very well done Americana Romance, September 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: A Taste of Honey (Friends Romance) (Paperback)
In 1838 the Reinharts immigrate from Germany to Texas. Eleven years later, twenty-year old Toya Reinhart vows to her dying twin sister that she will marry the man intended for Tilly, Peter, even though she loves Rad Wagner. To complicate matters, Toya's best friend Betina Bram loves Peter.

As Peter and Toya come closer to the alter, love begins to interfere even though honor remains in its way. Toya and Rad believe a vow is sacred. Betina cherishes her friendship with Toya and would do nothing to destroy it even if it costs her a lifetime of happiness. Peter also will honor his engagement. If the foursome only knew that they all been betrayed from the start, perhaps the correct pairing could finally occur in an honorable manner.

The first tale in the "Friends" series is a fervent novel that places the importance of honor high on the list to keep a friendship genuine and alive. The entire ensemble of this book is dazzlingly developed, turning this Americana romance into a pleasurable reading experience that will be relished by sub-genre fans even as they await December's edition (WHERE THE HEART IS by Sheridan Smythe). A TASTE OF HONEY is a sweet tasting appetizer in what appears to have the makings of a fabulous collection.
