5.0 out of 5 stars Ponty at his best!
If you are a fan of Ponty this alblum is a must. It is a 10 star on a scale of 5. You will not regret buying it. The music will make you feel good regardless of what is going on in your life. I heard it first in 1983 and listen to it today with as much satisfaction as I did in 1983. Enjoy!

2.0 out of 5 stars A low point for Ponty
Hard to understand what happened here. Songs like "Beach Girl" and "Life Cycles" sound like 2 or 3 ideas haphazardly pasted together. Most of the record lacks a groove easily found on other JLP records of this era. "Sunset Drive" is an exception, with a nice fretless bass solo by Ralphe Armstrong (whatever happened to him?).

I can't...

5.0 out of 5 stars Jean-Luc's best, March 4, 1999

When it comes right down to it, all these reviews are purely personal opinion. With that in mind, this is my favorite. I own ten of Jean-Luc's CDs and this one, along with Enigmatic Ocean, are the ones I listen to the most. I especially like the drum work on A Taste for Passon. Awesome! Maybe its the production, but the drums seem to come alive. Nice deep, rich sound. It also has more violin and less synthesizer; I like that. At any rate I would suggest this CD to any body who appreciates good contemporary jazz. Good Stuff!

This album is a relaxing journey for the Ponty band. The bass guitar work by Ralphe Armstrong is understated yet it demonstrates why he was the best. I wish he was still playing with someone. You will not find the dazzling Armstrong solos of "Egocentric Molecules" or "Struggle of the Turtle to the Sea", but a refined background which carries each song.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional late 70s fusion, September 30, 2002

Years ago I used up hundreds of blank audio cassettes recording music from the radio. Eventually, I outgrew that obsession (track 9 here), tapes demagnetized & turned to molasses, & I developed another one: finding all my favorite stuff on CD.

"Stay With Me" was one of those tunes; if you're even remotely romantic, this'll send chills up your spine. The rest is bouncy, lightweight fare but very listenable, if very 70s. For me, the music is a reminder of the pre-deregulation years when music was for something more than selling jeans & hot sauce.

5.0 out of 5 stars The reason I fell in love with his music some 20 years ago!, August 6, 1999

I first listened to this album back in the late 70's (some 20 years ago...I was only 3 at the time--hah!)and knew that I would be forever a fan. I love the pure raw talent (no syenthisers needed)found in this album, and is certainly one of my all-time favorites. I don't know about you, but back in the 70's most of my friends were listening to Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull and others, who, while definately talented in their own rights, were no comparison to Jean Luc Ponty in terms of depth of skill needed to play his music.I wore the grooves out on this one! It's been great listening to his music evolve over the years;looking forward to another 20 years!

If you listen to this record, you would think it was recorded sometime in the 80's, with the influx of midi and high production.... it's hard to fathom that this record was done 1979!

Clearly, you can see his direction in the forthcoming years.... and of course, with Holdsworth on guitar, it's a classic for sure.

I purchased this album originally on vinyl upon it's release some years ago. It took me on a journey & I haven't returned home yet. Ponty's natural talent along with his polished showmanship is an undeniable combo. His ability to take u from 1 point of a spectrum to another is uncanny. This work is definitely a trip worth taking. I'm forever a follower & a dedicated listener when it comes to this Musician. A gifted individual who has alot more to show! Thank you Jean for sharing your music.
