Part of Day One Publications `Truth For All Time' series, `Taste and see that the Lord is Good' is usefully subtitled `Knowing, Loving and Enjoying God' as this book explores a number of the attributes of God through the means of discussing well-known Old Testament characters and narrating their experience to teach us about the qualities we understand of God. Exploring attributes such as the justice, holiness, compassion, sovereignty and patience of God through God's dealings with characters such as Jonah, Moses, Joseph, Goliath and Adam is a clever means of demonstrating the qualities we associate with people and the higher qualities we see in God. Most of God's teaching about Himself in the Bible comes in the form of stories, reminding us that God is an infinite divine Person to be feared and loved in equal measure with what the writer calls a `happy mixture of awestruck fear and irrepressible love'. The book concludes with an excellent personal meditation of how we relate to God - His self existence, sovereignty, power, holiness, truthfulness, justice, patience and so on.., being not just a fact to be read about but a God to be engaged with personally, teaching us not only who God is but the demands that He makes of us. I found this a satisfying read because of the writer's style and his willingness to stop and reflect every so often on the qualities of God that we can never fully understand because of his Supreme Being.
