Excellent for Some Allergy Dogs,
By Heather M. (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food, Pacific Stream Canine Formula with Smoked Salmon, 30-Pound Bag (Misc.)
I have been feeding this food for several months to my 9-year old "allergy" Lab. He is doing wonderfully on it. Shiny coat, good muscle... and best of all... no more ear infections! He seems to love the taste. I would highly recommend this food to people whose dogs have allergies to grains, peas, chicken, beef, ...etc. Actually, I think it's a great food for dogs without allergies, too. My non-allergic bullmastiff is doing very well on it.

Still Too Much Fat, But Less Than Some Flavors...,
This review is from: Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food, Pacific Stream Canine Formula with Smoked Salmon, 30-Pound Bag (Misc.)
Tried this, recently, (in all dry flavors) for my German Shepherd Dog. At first, he wouldn't touch it, but after about a week, he decided he absolutely loves it. The biggest problem is within the first month, he had gained 3 pounds, even though he was eating less than the recommended amount and less than he was previously used to eating. Also, he had soft, oily looking stools while eating this. He is an active, very healthy, well-exercised, older dog. He did seem to be more "chipper" and health-wise, he seemed to do fine, except for the softer stools and weight gain, but reluctantly, we had to stop feeding this, exclusively, as we were feeding less and less and he was still gaining weight AND seemed hungry all the time, looking for any other food to eat. Since he loves the taste so much, we have decided to give him only a cup or so a day, in his Kong, with his other food or as training treats and have switched him to another food. I'm not sure I agree with the "good for all life stages" philosophy either. In the old days, that was what one did, but now that we know much more about nutrition, I believe that different life stages do require different nutrient levels. Much as humans do. Sadly, for our dog, this can not be the only food he eats, but it will remain a part of his daily diet, since he loves it and did well, except for the fat content. Hope this helps!

Best Grain-Free for the Money,
This review is from: Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food, Pacific Stream Canine Formula with Smoked Salmon, 30-Pound Bag (Misc.)
I have been feeding TOTW to my Italian Greyhound-Terrier mix for over a year now and I have nothing but good things to say about it. First, for all of those wanting to feed their dog grain-free, but struggling to pay Orijen prices, TOTW is the solution. TOTW is definitely the most cost-effective grain-free food I've been able to find.
For all of those fearful of the use of fish meal and the possible threat of ethoxyquin, it appears that TOTW customer service have confirmed that the particular ocean fish meal used in TOTW is, in fact, ethoxyquin-free. Here is the link to that information and a step-by-step analysis of the ingredient list. [...] After getting my dog from a rescue, feeding him TOTW has helped him reach a healthy weight and an active lifestyle. The vet has repeatedly noted how good his weight is, how great his coat looks and how well muscled he is. TOTW, with its high protein and fat content (fat is an essential part of a healthy diet for our four-legged friends) is a great, cost-effective grain-free option. However, those switching from grain kibbles need to be slow about switching their dogs to this kibble. TOTW and other grain-free foods are much richer and a 5 to 7 days slow transition will yield the best result. Is TOTW for every dog? Probably not, every dog reacts differently to different food and if you have a small breed, I would tend to focus on the lower protein content of the Pacific Stream formula rather than the High Prairie or Wetlands Formulas. I do, however, think TOTW can be a great option for a lot of dog owners. If you're interested in starting to feed grain-free and holistic dog food, TOTW has worked great for me and my dog.

I've been feeding Taste of the Wild for over a year and all 3 of my dogs are doing very well on it. My german shepherd has a lot of allergies and so far this is the only food I've tried that she hasn't had problems with. Its a good moderately priced dog food and much better than the grocery store brands.

Best Dry Food HANDS DOWN!,

***For the person with 1 star It states quite clearly on their site FAQ:
DOES THIS FOOD CONTAIN ETHOXYQUIN? Taste of the Wild Pet Foods sources all protein meals (chicken meal, fish meal, etc) from vendors that do not use ethoxyquin. As always, only natural preservatives are used in our manufacturing process to preserve the foods. So why someone would review this and give it 1 star is beyond me! I started to use this after my smooth coat chihuahua Herbie seemed a little sickly. I didnt realize soy and grain is not a good thing for our animals. I previously used Royal Canin. He's full of energy and his coat is darker and shiny! We also augment his food with the Tast Of The Wild Wetlands food and he loves that also. The high protein content means the animal will be less hungry and consume less food in the long run. Think about it if you eat chicken or steak your less hungry than if you ate a bunch of rice because carbs get burned quickly. BUY this food your doggy will thank you for it!

Bulldog Heaven,
This review is from: Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food, Pacific Stream Canine Formula with Smoked Salmon, 30-Pound Bag (Misc.)
This is absolutely the best dog food I've ever used. We have both a Boxer and an English Bulldog. Before this food, they both had sensitive stomachs and even more sensitive, acne prone skin. Now they poo only twice a day. They shed less, their coats and skin are both flawless. Honestly!!!! I absolutely cannot tell you how much of a positive change we've realized since finding Taste of the Wild Salmon formula.

Priced too high!!!
We buy this food at a Feed store and pay $47.00 + tax! Our 6 dogs love this food. We have 3 Chihuahua's 2 Labs and 1 Shepherd mix and they have all done well with it since we discovered about 2 years ago. We've tried other "natural" kibbles but these are the BEST, hands down! Our Chihuahua's like theirs with a little warm water - it really brings out the flavor and they love the gravy! Our Chihuahua's used to have sensitive stomachs but not anymore, all of our dogs have improved skin and they have really soft, shiny fur. You also don't need to feed them as much food as the less nutritious competitor (which contains corn) and they all of them have perfectly formed stools. It's always recommended by your Vet to gradually change your dogs over to a new diet but once you do, you will never need to coax your dog to dinnertime - they'll actually let you know when it's time! We rate "Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food" - especially "Pacific Stream Canine Formula with Smoked Salmon" because it's our dog's favorite as well as ours!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food, Pacific Stream Canine Formula with Smoked Salmon, 30-Pound Bag (Misc.)
I've done hours and hours of homework on high quality, grain-free dog foods. From product analysis, kcal analysis, ingredients, customer reviews, professional reviews, company recalls - all of it... I have become a mini-expert in the field.
I was pushed into becoming an expert because my yellow Lab kept having seizures and I couldn't figure out the source. I finally learned it was her food, which was the most expensive store bought brand my local Sams Warehouse carries. I thought I was giving her the best, it looked fresh and rich, but it turns out it was just absolutely terrible food. My black Lab also had terrible skin allergies, to the point where I would get a small rash on my skin if he laid next to me on the couch for more than 5 minutes at a time. I had no clue it was because of the food. But it was! Since having that epiphany and learning so much about dog food, I've always made sure to feed them the highest quality grain free food I can buy. This Taste of the Wild (TOTW) fits the bill very nicely, and they love it. Since switching to a grain free diet, the yellow lab has not had any more seizures in over a year, and the black lab has the silkiest coat you've ever seen and his skin allergies are completely gone. They are on 2/3rds dry and 1/3rd wet combination. Contrary to what I had previously been raised to believe, a wet diet is not bad for dogs but in fact is superior! I use the combination to save money while providing them the best I can. Before deciding on TOTW, I had also tried Blue Buffalo, Wellness Core, and Orijen. Briefly: they are all good foods, but my labs were happiest on TOTW and my wallet is also happiest on TOTW. I also believe TOTW has a better formulation for them and their life style (some of the products, like Orijen, are simply too rich for the average household dog, despite being made of the best ingredients available). Enter TOTW. The dry food is dark and rich, with no sign of crumbling. The kibble is a good average size. The wet food has nice chunks of meat and the right amount of gravy. I use the wet food as a topper to mix the 2/3rd dry and 1/3rd wet together for their meals. I use one whole can of wet per meal with my pack, which is convinient so I don't have to store it in the refrigerator - btw, never store canned dog food in the fridge in the original aluminum container! I still wish I could find a less expensive product with the same quality, but in the mean time, TOTW is the best choice for my pack.

Great results for allergies, company said ethoxyquin free,

I have a beagle with bad food allergies, I started a different limited ingredient food and she still had loose stools so I decided to give taste of the wild pacific stream a try. She has no more loose stools and its only been 2 weeks now. This is the first food I tried that helped with that. I can't say how good otherwise because its only been 2 weeks now, but so far so good and I called the company and they do guarantee that it is ethoxyquin free. It is also one of the top foods on dog food analysis. Since she is a beagle and only 25 pounds, I am pleased with the protein amount for a dog her size. The last food she was on was lower protein and some are to high for her size. I made sure this food was ethoxyquin free before I purchased it. She loves it. This is the first time in a year that her stools are formed, and not very loose. I am having her allergy tested in 2 weeks so I will know if its ok for her to stay on this food but so far eliminating grains for her has been great. I won't know the full effect until a few months as far as the itchiness and biting her feet, but so far this is helping her a lot. I will give an update once she is on it longer. I have tried quite a few other limited ingredient foods and allergy formulas and she would vomit and have a ton of itching, but this one she tolerated right away and I weaned her slowly. She is very sensitive to foods.

Need to coax dog to eat it, but had no problem switching,
By HalfGeek (Washington, DC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food, Pacific Stream Canine Formula with Smoked Salmon, 30-Pound Bag (Misc.)
My dog, a half Yorkie half Bichon, recently decided to start being picky about her food. I tried taking it away when she would it etc, but then she'd end up eating only half her food in a day, and after several days of that (and several months of trying other techniques to get her to eat), I gave up and finally switched foods. She wasn't happy with anything for more than a few days (dried food, that is), so I decided to try Taste of the Wild's salmon and lamb flavors, since they had lower protein and fat content than the other flavors. She ate both for a few days, then wouldn't eat it, so I started adding a teaspoon of one of Merrick's canned foods (a super moist one), mixing it all together, and now she loves it (thus I'm taking a star away since she wouldn't eat it plain after a few days). What I liked about this food is that I was able to switch immediately, no transition period, without a glitch (hey, she wouldn't eat the other food, so I didn't have much choice!). And, bonus points, her stool is, for the first time in her short year long existence, perfect with this food. It never was before. So on the stool count alone, I decided to stick with this. It's been a month and she's still eating it - I give her salmon in the morning and lamb at night, I didn't feel right just feeding her fish and no meat, but am switching the two flavors back and forth hoping the variety keeps her going. So far so good. Oh, and I'm not noticing the difference in the coat that others have mentioned, but maybe four weeks isn't a long enough time to notice.
