5.0 out of 5 stars Gave me a new way of thinking
I just finished reading this book, lent to me by a friend. I'm thinking now that I should buy my own copy! It gave me a whole new way of thinking about "dieting". This book doesn't tell me what I can or cannot eat, it just makes me think about what I REALLY want before I cram it in my mouth. In the few days since I began reading it, I have already caught...

1.0 out of 5 stars It's not about the food
I saw Dr. Gullo for several years. I lost nearly 100 pounds. I thought I had finally found the help I needed with my life long compulsive eating problem. I did. My success lasted for three years. During that time, I didn't touch the "trigger foods" he helped me to identify. Imagine: Not one grain of sugar, not one morsel of flour not one drop of fat for...

This book doesn't tell me what I can or cannot eat, it just makes me think about what I REALLY want before I cram it in my mouth. In the few days since I began reading it, I have already caught myself using its advice. I'm sure it's going to be extremely useful to me, not only for losing weight (my immediate goal) but for living a healthy lifestyle without depriving myself of the little luxuries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some people can't handle the truth!, May 1, 2003
This review is from: Thin Tastes Better (Paperback)
The reason this book inspires so much passion is that a food addict HATES to be told that they will have to give up their favorite "trigger" foods FOREVER. It's like an alcoholic, who doesn't want to give up Gin. I resisted the idea of Trigger foods for years. I remember yelling at the TV when Gullo was being introduced and his theory was being explained.

The thing is, he's right. Certain people should NEVER have chocolate cake ever again. And that's the truth. His program is filled with ideas that make losing the weight and then keeping it off MUCH easier. It's a reality check and some people don't like reality.

The "moderation" idea never worked for me. The Elimination that Gullo suggests absolutely has worked. This food addiction is serious stuff and needs serious medicine.

And I'm in a Size 6! It's the Mecca of lifestyle change books. I wish more food addicts would consider his theory. The world would be a thinner place!

5.0 out of 5 stars A strong recommendation, January 7, 2000
By A Customer
I've not only read the book, but I've been seeing Dr. Gullo for some time now (the book is much cheaper). I was appropriately skeptical in the beginning. Having lost 45 pounds and kept it off for over 2 years all I can say is - it works.

4.0 out of 5 stars you have to CHOOSE to change your life!, October 28, 1998
By A Customer
This was the first "diet" book that I read as I began this battle of losing weight. It's just the kind of straight talk I needed to get motivated to start evaluating my nutritional and health goals. Gullo's main focus is that it's your CHOICE whether or not you get healthy or lose weight. All these gurus tell us this and that are bad for our health, or that we must do such-and-such to lose the weight, but until you choose that you want to be slimmer and live a healthier life, it's never going to happen on its own. I really appreciated hearing that.

5.0 out of 5 stars I lost 65 lbs. with help from this book!, March 30, 1999
This book helped me focus my mind on my weight loss. I lost 65 lbs. and have kept it off for a year now. I am buying multiple copies for my friends and relatives! The psychology of permanent weight loss is the most important thing, and this book really helped me change my way of thinking about food and exercise.

1.0 out of 5 stars It's not about the food, February 16, 2002

I saw Dr. Gullo for several years. I lost nearly 100 pounds. I thought I had finally found the help I needed with my life long compulsive eating problem. I did. My success lasted for three years. During that time, I didn't touch the "trigger foods" he helped me to identify. Imagine: Not one grain of sugar, not one morsel of flour not one drop of fat for three years! But compulsive eating is not only about food addiction. Therein lies the flaw. This strategy does not address the reasons for which we run to food in the first place. When the inevitable emotional jolts of life surface, where does one seek solace?
If the underlying emotional issues are not addressed, there is a real danger of exchanging one obsession for another. I became a "shop-aholic" instead of a "food-aholic." I found solace in Gullo's mantra "It's better to wear Italian than to eat Italian." I need not mention where that can lead. The ensuing eating binge was like a runaway freight train. I have gained back 90% of the weight that I lost and I'm still grappling with the emotion issues which caused the problem in the first place. That's what happens when you put a band-aid on festering sore.

1.0 out of 5 stars All wrong, October 1, 1999
By A Customer
This book is the antithesis of what I consider normal, healthy eating habits. What the author doesn't realize is that dieting only perpetuates overeating. Most people can only live with such restrictions for awhile before they go crazy and EAT EAT EAT. The only solution is to return to natural eating ... and believe me, you WILL lose weight. I weigh 105 lbs and I got here by eating whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. There is a fabulous book called "The 7 Secrets of Slim People" and it explains how to give up dieting forever. It's the best thing I've ever done!

This review is from: Thin Tastes Better (Paperback)
I think this book is really true and honest about the reality of permanant weight loss. I think if you have the motivation and discipline this book will definitely help you realize the steps needed to make it permanant.
