5.0 out of 5 stars Book Club Treat/Break
Discovering this jewel of a book is like finding buried treasure. It's filled to the brim with information presented in an entertaining and well-paced manner. I can't believe how much I didn't know -- not just about the ten food categories covered -- but about my own food preferences. Now, after hosting my own chocolate tasting, I know I'll always hold out for the...

3.0 out of 5 stars I felt ripped off
Okay, it's my fault that I feel ripped off - I'd purused the olive oil and balsamic vinegar sections and said to myself "This is great" - the advice on what accompaniments to serve, the vocabulary of the product, the grid to evaluate each item being tested with its emphasis on one's own palate... the material is well done. The book is beautifully laid out...

5.0 out of 5 stars Book Club Treat/Break, September 3, 2006
This review is from: Tasting Club: Gathering Together to Share and Savor Your Favorite Tastes (Hardcover)
Discovering this jewel of a book is like finding buried treasure. It's filled to the brim with information presented in an entertaining and well-paced manner. I can't believe how much I didn't know -- not just about the ten food categories covered -- but about my own food preferences. Now, after hosting my own chocolate tasting, I know I'll always hold out for the Venezuelan chocolate.

It's gorgeous, the price is right and will make a great gift to bring to a party. Better yet, I think it will create a fun opportunity for a book club break, especially at holiday times when everyone is busy. Having a tasting club meeting -- instead of the usual format -- is an inspired idea!

You'll love this book! Its both delicious and smart. If you're a novice to the dinner party, its a great alternative - a really fun spin on entertaining. I hope to attend future tastings because I've given this book as both a housewarming and bridal shower gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book worth tasting....., September 1, 2006
This review is from: Tasting Club: Gathering Together to Share and Savor Your Favorite Tastes (Hardcover)
This book is a real treat. How refreshing for an author to teach us how to use our sense of taste and identify the differences in flavors your palate encounters. There was alot of hard work, research & thought put into this book. The author has done a splendid job of enlightening the reader (& tastee) about the many flavors of food that one has never realized. After reading this one, your palate becomes ever more sensory the next time you eat. ENJOY tasting this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book You Will Love, September 10, 2006
This review is from: Tasting Club: Gathering Together to Share and Savor Your Favorite Tastes (Hardcover)
A book worthy of a complete read. I took it with me on a recent flight. "The Tasting Club, I want to join!" the flight attendant said. I smiled, agreeing. What fun! Who wouldn't want to come to a tasting party. This book is filled with gorgeous photographs and plans for 10 kinds of tasting parties. A lot of us have enjoyed wine tastings, but who would have thought of a party tasting apples or honey or tea or balsamic vinegar. The book is clearly organized - each party has the information needed to put together a tasting - information about the food, "learn your palate" and even recipies to accompany the event. I couldn't wait for a tasing party to try Dina's hot chocolate - oh sooo delicious. You will love this book.

This book is both beautiful and useful. I so enjoy reading all of the interesting information about the different types of foods and drinks, and have learned so much! And the photos are gorgeous. I have already attended a tasting party inspired by the book, and it was a huge success -- and I was told by the hostess that the event took very little planning or work on her part. A fantastic idea!

I recommend this as a great gift idea, for foodies and also those who don't cook, because the tasting parties can be held with minimal effort. It's more of a book to inspire us to get together and try new things - great idea! As a bonus, there's plenty of information and recipes to try for those who want to go deeper and learn more. I tried the honey tasting - fun, and the guests were really surprised at the differences in honey tastes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, August 21, 2006
This review is from: Tasting Club: Gathering Together to Share and Savor Your Favorite Tastes (Hardcover)
I just got a copy of this book today and I LOVE it! This is the perfect book for anyone... from the enthusiastic entertainer looking for something new to the kitchen-phobic who would like to have a low-maintenance get together. The photos and layout are beautiful--everyone I know is going to be getting this for b-days, host/ess gifts, etc.

I haven't tried any of the tastings yet (obviously), but I've held tastings for friends before (wine, cheese) and it's clear that this book takes them many steps further. I'm already dreaming of a cured meat tasting, a chocolate tasting, an apple tasting (maybe preceded by an apple picking trip)...

This is simply a gorgeous book that all entertainers must have. If you want to do something creative with your guests, Dina Cheney's book Tasting Club offers simple yet very impressive ways to do so with "tastings" for your visitors. We can't wait for our dark chocolate tasting party!

5.0 out of 5 stars Expand your horizon, August 17, 2007

This review is from: Tasting Club: Gathering Together to Share and Savor Your Favorite Tastes (Hardcover)
I purchased this book because I love to entertain. However, it's just such a tiring process. I also needed new supper club ideas. This book solves both problems!

This book covers the basic wine tasting, but also provides foodie treat tastings such as:
chocolate
cheese
honey
tea
olive oil
cured meats
balsamic vinegar
apples
beer

The author provides worksheets to help conduct the tasting, recipes and menues. Each tasting section is organized as follows:

Know your food
Find your food
Choose your accompaniments
Oranize your tasting
Learn your palate

If you want a head start for your tasting, try Crate & Barrel. In store and online they have tasting honeys, salts, chocolates and olive oil.

This book is a must-have for any foodie!
