Perhaps best-known as the first band to feature young banjo player Béla Fleck, Tasty Licks demonstrated that Northern bluegrass had arrived in a serious way. Their music is chock full of surprises such as novel vocal harmonies, lightning chord changes and abrupt rhythmic transitions. Yet, Tasty Licks surely does not use this arsenal of devices for its own sake, for what enhances their music more than anything else is the unity of vocal and instrumental work. If its individual soloists are impressive, more so is the degree to which each has pooled his talents for the sake of a unified expression. It is a rare achievement in modern bluegrass.
