I read a lot of historical fiction, this might fit well into a porn bracket but was not very good reading.

Anthony, a consummate fantasy bard, steps out into the real world and develops a compelling story from a collection of bones excavated, in part, by his daughter. This story of native Americans meeting the Spanish Conquistadors gives an easy read introduction to this time of dramatic change. With relevant and appropriate detail, Anthony lets the average reader experience the onslaught of the white man from an Indian perspective. At the same time, the reader comes to know a little more about the native American tribes in the South Florida region and learns some of the narratives that must have enriched thier lives. This book is not a research piece, but a fun, lively story which grips the reader with heartwrenching strength through to the foreshadowed cataclismic ending. Both my thumbs were up so high, I had trouble turning pages!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites from Piers, July 17, 2006
By
This review is from: Tatham Mound (Paperback)
When I first read this book, I was only familiar with Anthony's science fiction and fantasy works, such as the Xanth series and the Incarnations of Immortality, so when I read the blurb and saw the subject matter, I was a bit skeptical. I've read and re-read this book countless times now, and it's become my favorite from Piers.

His usual wit and gift of knowing how to make you care about the characters is there, and I still have to swallow a lump in my throat at times. Even if you've never heard of any of the pre-Seminole Florida tribes, even if you're not a history buff, this is an amazing read. I can't recommend it strongly enough.

Despite my youth, I have done my share of reading over the past several years. In all the novels and stories I have read nothing has come close to beating this one as my number one. I absolutely love this book. It's a creative story and inventive view about life back before technology. With myths and other smaller stories entwined, this book is a hard to put done read. I recommend this book to everyone who asks me, "Know any good books." And all who have read it have told me the same thing. "Thanks for recommending that book. I couldn't put it down. It was a great read." So...if you are looking for a good book...this should be on your list of must reads.

It was well worth the wait, a breath taking read. I hope he writes more historical fiction, his style is very good and the story will keep you up at night to see the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars History and Heroism, April 21, 2000
This review is from: Tatham Mound (Paperback)
Tathem Mound is a wonderful book about a native Floridan, circa 1500. It includes many cutures in the area including Maya, Creek and Cherokee. It also tells some of the myths in the Native Oral Tradition beautifuly. It gives insight to what may have happened within a native family around the time when the conqestadors first landed. Due to sexual content, it may not be sutible to younger readers, but the myths make lovely bedtime stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic fiction!, December 1, 2009

What a story of intrigue, fictional history, and pre european american culture. I read this first about 10 years ago while in the desert of Iraq. I found this book again on Amazon and am taking more time to read and enjoy the book. This is one of my favorites, the book is so well written you actually feel like your a part of the story. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes fiction based in historical fact.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book with only a few minor drawbacks., February 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Tatham Mound (Paperback)
Piers Anthonys book "Tatham Mound" was an excellent story. From the beginning it is exciting and gives one a very in depth and real idea of what Native American life might have been like. I recommend it to readers from teen up. The whole plot is well laid out. A few parts may drag a little but, as always, Mr. Anthony never leaves you disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Facinating departure for Piers Anthony & his fans!, November 24, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: Tatham Mound (Paperback)
This book proves that Piers Anthony is a man of many talents. This is a facinating look at pre-historic life, in a realistic setting; not what you would expect from this author. No one else could have done it better! As always, the author's comments provide great insight.
