5.0 out of 5 stars Great for girls
This book is awesome, esp. for girls. It features folk tales in which the protagonists are all smart, strong, clever, just girls or women. We read it to my daughter at 4, and at 9, she still goes back and rereads the stories.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Substantive
If all you are looking for is nice stories featuring brave/intelligent women, it is fine.

However, if you value fairytales because they contain vital psychological and esoteric truths which humankind has kept in circulation for millenia and are the first information brand new humans get, you will not find it here.

It is a shame because girls DO...

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Extremely Memorable, But Well Done, August 22, 2001

My mother purchased this book for me as a very young girl, along with other collections of short-stories, and I remember being enchanted with it. The legends are fascinating, although I don't think the fact that they were all about young women and girls ever crossed my mind (an observation that leads me to believe this book would be good for boys, as well).

I recently re-read the stories, and was delighted. I remember being confused as a girl, since the places, people, and customs are mostly foreign, and so I wouldn't recommend these books to any one younger then six. And even then, with the lack of pictures, it's great for adults to read to kids (no matter what age, within reason). Worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Girls who can, August 20, 2001
This review is from: Tatterhood and Other Tales (Paperback)
It was not until after reading these stories to my daughter, that I realized that the fairy tales my generation of women had grown up usually had heroines who needed to be rescued. The heroines in Tatterhood solve problems, rescue themselves and sometimes their princes. Hopefully girls will identify with these competent and confident heroines. I don't know many women who can afford to sit around in an ivory tower waiting for a prince to rescue them. These are wonderful, amusing tales from another and equally valid perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection to read to both girls and boys!, May 25, 1999

What a delightful range of stories. Nothing overly pointed or didatic here. Just good interesting stories that hold any child's attention. I found these stories particularly good to share with my son and nephews who are often engaged in fantasy stories full of male heroics. These stories have just as much heroics, but here the heroes are girls and women. Give a copy to every parent you know!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent storybook for girls of all ages, January 20, 1999
This review is from: Tatterhood and Other Tales (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book, very female affirming. The heroines do not languish in a tower waiting for the handsome prince to save them, but instead take the leading roles in adventures, take action, solve problems, and win with wit and cleverness. My daughters and I LOVE this book! If you have daughters, nieces, grandaughters, little sisters, this is a wonderful book to read together.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great book, February 23, 1999

This review is from: Tatterhood and Other Tales (Paperback)
A wonderful book. My 9 year old daughter grabbed it and read ahead in it every night after I'd read a few stories to her and her sister. I'm going to buy a copy for my mother-in-law (a confirmed feminist) and for my daughters' school library. Has all the proper self-affirming, brave-girls-do-things values, and (certainly as if not more important) very good stories, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of heroic women, August 19, 2004

This is one of the best collections of fairy tales featuring strong and enterprising hereoines. It includes stories from may different cultures, but all feature clever, resourceful women who overcome adversity. some of the stories were already familiar to me, but many I'd never read before. If you thought all fairy tale heroines were ninnies like Cinderella and snow White, you need to read this excellent book and discover women like Kate Crackernuts, Clever Manka, Sea Girl, and the Three Strong Women.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tatterhood Rides Again!, March 14, 2007
This review is from: Tatterhood and Other Tales (Paperback)
I remembered this collection of world tales from my own youth and was pleased that it was just as vibrant and fun as I remembered. Although the tales center around female protagonists, children and adults of any gender can enjoy the action, wit, and surprising tales featured here.

5.0 out of 5 stars just what the doctor ordered, January 3, 2007
This review is from: Tatterhood and Other Tales (Paperback)
My 8 yo daughter has been getting a little sarcastic as of late. I turned to stories to try to remedy the situation. Tatterhood has opened up her world with strong, often humorous, female role models. I am so glad I bought the book! My 6 yo son and my husband and I enjoy it as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars To be read time and again!, February 1, 2011
This review is from: Tatterhood and Other Tales (Paperback)
I remember reading this book when I was little. I read it so many times I wore it out and I had to buy a new copy to have something to read to my sister's children when they come to visit. The tales are not as dark as Grimm's tend to be and the stories are different, not just your maiden-in-distress stories with a handsome prince to save the day. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a fairy tale book for a young reader. Its tales are empowering for young girls because it does not teach you to be reliant upon dashing young men for help. If I have a daughter of my own, this will be a book I get her as soon as she is able to understand the words in the book, and hopefully she'll enjoy it as much as I have over the years.
