5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome and really easy to use! August 21, 2011
I did not purchase my Tattler lids from Amazon, but directly from Tattler. I love these lids. I canned 19 quarts of peaches for my first attempt with Tattler lids. They all sealed! Simply follow the directions in the brochure - make sure to turn back the metal ring 1/4 inch before putting the jar in the canner. Really easy to use! Will never buy the other kind again - especially after finding out they have BPA in them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stellar product August 31, 2011
By Kiko
I also bought these lids directly from Tattler, but love them so much I couldn't help but offer a review.

These lids are in fact very easy to use. They are not like conventional one-time use canning lids in their needs - Tattler lids have a specific method to them, but once you get it down, you'll wonder how you ever did it before. It's very simple, just read the instructions!

Like the other reviewer, I won't ever go back to traditional one-time use canning lids. They're a literal waste heading straight to the landfill. I will recommend, however, that you keep all of your old rings/screw bands. You'll need those with Tattler lids!

I have not used these lids to pressure can, only water bath can, but friends that have report nothing but rave reviews. Perhaps the other reviewer wasn't tightening immediately after putting jars out of the canner? I have however re-used lids multiple times and they do just as well each time.

Bottom line: if you take good care of your glass jars and these Tattler lids, you won't ever have to buy canning supplies again!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed! September 22, 2012
I was so excited to get my tattler lids (purchased 12 doz from the tattler web site). I used the tattler lids for the first time to can 16 pint jars of chicken in my pressure canner. I am not a veteran canner but have processed several dozen jars of various meats in my pressure canner and a LOT of different jellies, pickles, fruits, jams etc. by hot water bath method. I have not had a single jar fail to seal EVER until I used the Tattler lids. One of the 16 jars did not seal. I followed the directions to a T, making sure I did not over-tighten the rings. I was very disappointed, not only that one jar failed but also because 1. no familiar ping (must rely solely on lifting by the lid to test) 2. rings and lids were covered in dirty crud after processing (had to scrub the rings with a Brillo pad urg!)3. the rings were all dented up after pressure canning with Tattler lids (never had that happen before) 4. all the tattler lids have little chips in the edge of them (maybe part of the manufacturing process and normal but some had chips bigger than others 5. after washing the used tattler lids, they still smelled like the chicken I had processed. I couldn't get the smell out (maybe air time will solve that??? or vinegar or bleach soak...urg!) 6. Tattler lids are expensive! ...now that I think about it, I probably could have bought a lifetimes worth of regular disposable lids for what I paid for those 144 tattler lids. I probably won't even use them again unless the world as we know it ends and Ball lids are no longer available. If you are considering Tattler lids, I recommend investing in one box first and try them out before buying in bulk. Cheap, reliable and disposable Ball lids are the way to go as far as I am concerned. Oh...... Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Love them, but miss the "pop" April 3, 2012
I really like these Tattler lids. It's wonderful that they can be reused. I've used them in my pressure canner without any problem at all. I only wish they made the popping sound of a traditional lid while cooling down. As someone fairly new to canning, I find that sound reassuring after canning that I did things right. Once cooled, though, I always check and my Tattler lids have done the job.

I have been canning for several years now and can all sorts of things each year: hundreds and thousands of quarts of beans as well as hundreds of quarts of beef and chicken, soups, and various other pressure canned items. I also waterbath.

I have been using the Tattler lids for almost 2 years now and decided to invest in more lids a few months ago. Before doing that I did a google search for reviews on the lids. I was surprised to find mixed reviews - some, like me, who really like the lids and do not seem to have a problem with them and some who have had nothing but problems and would not recommend them to anyone. This of course caused me to wonder why the big difference? The only thing I could think of is user error. It is quite possible that the negative reviews were simply the result of not knowing how to can properly. That's an assumption of course but I think it's a safe one. User error can even occur with seasoned canners because these lids are just simply different and it takes a little effort to get used to them.

One big complaint I see is that the lids will unseal after a while of being stored. Now, don't get me wrong, I HAVE had a few lids come unsealed while in storage ... but I have had metal lids come unsealed as well. It seems the lids that get dirty during canning are the ones that are more apt to come undone, and this makes total sense. In order to prevent this, be sure to leave enough head space between the food and the lid. I leave an inch and that seems to do the job right.

Many have complained of failed seals right out of the canner. One cause of this could be leaving them to cool in the canner too long.

These work just fine. I use them on jars with my vacuum sealer machine. They seem to hold a vacuum seal, at least so far.
