This book is by far the best book I have ever looked at on the topic. It might be a little pricey but its so worth it. I have many books on Japanese tattooing and this one blows them all out of the water. Do not hesitate to buy. When I got this book in the mail I was so surprised, it is huge, heavy and beautiful. This is a must have for anyone interested in Japanese tattooing.

I've been collecting books on Japanese tattooing since 1988, when the book of the same name was first published in hardcover. Since then I've collected almost every book on the subject, at least all of the ones available on Amazon, save one.
Every one of these books approach the subject from a different perspective, either heavy on text or photos, but I've have'nt gotten a bad one yet.
Having said all that, this one, from a purely visual perspective, is the absolute best one yet. Really stunning photography and the sheer pleasure of owning a massive book of this quality-- both of content and actual quality of the physical book itself-- even the pages are thicker than most.
It covers both traditional japanese and modern western influenced tattooing. In the other volumes I own, The tradional work is always technically flawless. Almost all of it here is also such... but what fascinated me were several pages of backpieces that were NOT technically flawless--- Shaky lines, faded color and just plain bad drawing and layout. Wow, the old artists are not ALL super genius's!
Obviously, it's expensive, but worth it. I wish I could afford the 3 volume black and white set from the same publisher!

This is a very big and beautiful book, the price may seem a little high, but when you see it with your own eyes, it totally worth every single cent. The pages are tick, the book is heavy, it's like an encyclopedia!
I haven't read the entire book, so far it's a delight, the quality in the photos are amazing, I have some other books about Japanese tattoo culture and this is by far the best in my small collection.
If you look for a huge book about Japanese Tattoos, look no further, this is it!
Do a recommend this book? Yes, you deserve it!
