Ok Van Halen fans a little history here. This new Van Halen song is cool and not just because we have new music from these guys with original singer David Lee Roth...this song has history. The song was orginally titled "Down in Flames" and was played live in Japan the first time on 6/19/78 at Shinjuku, Koseinenkin Hall. This track was supposed to appear on Van Halen II but was replaced by the song "You're No Good". The original version can be found on several bootlegs found through fans of Van Halen.

Fast forward to 2012. The song was resorected for their new album "A Different Kind of Truth" and is released as the first single from it. Tattoo now has new lyrics which seem fresh for today's world. I'm glad they pulled this track out of the vaults and reworked it. It always sounded cool and as a "Fan", this is one we always wanted to get a proper release. The vocals fit David Lee Roth's singing style and Eddie's guitar playing is perfect. This si a great song and fans of the band should really dig it. ROCK ON!

I've waited 27 years for this new album, and if the first single is any indication of how "A Different Kind of Truth" will sound, I'll be elated! It's quite clear that Eddie Van Halen still has it and is playing like it's 1984 all over again! With all of the trash that's out there today billed as music, this new Van Halen tune is breath of fresh air! There will be naysayers out there, but forget them! They are fickle fans that would complain about anything that VH puts out while listening to Lady Gaga or Justin Beiber in the background. Van Halen is the greatest rock band in the world IMO, that changed rock-n-roll forever! Rock bands today owe a debt of gratitute to the mighty VH. Eddie Van Halen is musical genius that has influenced more guitar players that anyone in history. Long live VAN HALEN!!

Yes, it took almost 30 years, but what the hell! Van Halen sounds great. If only they had stayed together all that time. I know people like the Van Hagar and other years, but they did nothing for me.

David Lee Roth is integral to the band. He is the perfect counterpoint to Eddie's stratospheric playing! To me, Van Halen has always been like this great rock 'n' roll circus act, with spectacular songs, amazing riffs and incredible energy.

"Tattoo" is a great first single! I hope there's at least one crazy song on the new album like "Hot for Teacher" where they just go nuts and have fun.

I love having them back again! Look forward to the album!

While "Tattoo" may not be in the overdrive mode of VH's first period, it would've still been a strong track on an album like 1984. It certainly blows most of the Van Hagar songs out of the water.

After only 6 listens in the last two weeks, I feel it calling me more often all the time. It's becoming infectious. I've been delving into it more with repeated listenings: the wickedly catchy chorus, the classy production & performance, Eddie's elegant intro phrase and virtuoso solo, Dave's great singing filled with umph and pizzaz, the tightness of the playing and looseness of the feel, and the trademark humor. Sheer entertainment of the highest quality.

Could it have been more explosive? Yes, Dave could've gone up a tone or two on some of the chorus repeats, Eddie could've pitched the intro phrase higher in the solo, and the drumming could've had more flair and imagination. But there's the rest of the album for that.

Kudos to the boys.

Why they picked this song for an opener is beyond me. The rest of the cd is excellent. Go to youtube and listen to full version of blood and fire...it rocks!

Great start to the new year. Looking forward to hearing more in the near future. Catchy chorus with a signature Eddie Van Halen solo well placed.

Although skeptical if they still have it, I must say I'm VERY impressed by Van Halen's first single Tattoo. Like others have noted, sounds like a throwback to previously released and unreleased Van Halen music. And I love that. They seem to be modern, but didn't overthink it. Great production, good vibe, strong guitar and vocal matching. And Alex's snare is undeniably the most recongnizable sound of any Van Halen song. Great job guys...see you on the road!

Van Halen is no doubt a classic rock band and a name that will live on. Tattoo does not hit me in the face like many of their old songs do, but that is only from the first listen. The song seems to be taking off on the Rock charts and the Billboard Hot 100. It debuts on the Rock Charts at #16 and is noted as the Greatest Gainer. It also debuts on the Hot 100 at #67. I'm glad David Lee Roth is back with Van Halen and hopefully this incredible band will take back their place as one of the best. Maybe this song will grow on me.

Poppy song from A Different King Of Truth, it's catchy and OK... but take a listen to the rest of the CD. Truly amazing!!!!!!!!!! Tattoo is probably the weakest song on the CD. After a few listens I'm willing to say that this might be one of the top 5 rock CD's in the past 25 years. Very heavy, probably VH's heaviest ever and without a weak song in the 13.

Very surprised....

I am a Roth fan and a Van Halen fan. I will say this... my first impression of the sound brought me back to the good old days. Loved the first listen. The second listen wasn't as good and made me wonder. Now the song is really starting to grow on me. I just wonder why they couldn't use another song as a single. I think "She's the Woman" would have been a better single (and it is one song I look forward to hearing).

I am not going to love this album because David is back. I am not going to blindly support it. Looking at the track list makes me get really excited. I am glad DLR is back with the band. I am gladd Eddie and David are finally getting along. Sammy Hagar said just a few months ago this new album would never come out. Just shows you how much he knows!

DLR and Eddie- Keep making more music and I will buy it! The greatest electric guitar player in the world meets the best entertainer in the world (David Lee Roth). What more can you ask for in the year 2012? It really does bring a tear to my eyes! I am in heaven now! THANK YOU VAN HALEN!
