Gr. 6-9. This evenhanded, issues-oriented study of two ancient but increasingly trendy practices, which is part of the Lucent Overview series, incorporates information about recent litigation and legislation--as well as brief discussions of scarification and other decorative mutilation, temporary and reversible alternatives, and even copyright issues for tattoo designs. Unfortunately, most of the rare illustrations are murky black-and-white photos, and often the images relate only tangentially to the corresponding text and caption. Though valuable for the up-to-date resource lists at the end, this may initially be passed over by most assignment-driven readers in favor of Kathlyn Gay and Christine Whittington's more colorful Body Marks: Tattooing, Piercing, and Scarification (2002). But consider it an acceptable additional purchase. John Peters

I used this book for my college paper. Found this book very informative and interesting. I would reccommend anyone wanting to research why people pierce, to read this book.
