Tavern on the Green,
By LaLa (Cincinnati, OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tavern on the Green: 125 Recipes For Good Times (Hardcover)
I bought this book after having Saturday brunch at the restaurant. I loved the history of the piece of property, the various owners, and famous people that have been "seen" there. The recipes had worth because they contained the gravies and the sauces that really make a dish special. As I age I am always on the lookout for something else to surprise my taste buds.

Love this, Beautiful Book...,

I Love this book! It is SO beautifully made and put together, I live in NYC and have eaten in "Tavern" many times over the years, and it was always a joy in the Crystal Room. This book tells the entire History of Tavern with photos from the beginning to the end, little antedotes throughout, tidbits about events, who ate there, stories, etc. and great recipes. Tavern's last night under the LeRoy Family was this past New Year's Eve, 2009. I live near the restaurant and went to it about 7:00 that evening just to have one last look and walk through and I wanted to go to the gift shop and purchase, but to my surprise, they already had it closed out. So I sadly enjoyed my last walk through, enjoyed seeing all the guests coming in for their one last dinner there, it was very heartwarming and sad. Came home went to their website and found the store was closed on it too. Came here to Amazon and found the book I wanted! Was I HAPPY, for this is what I went to purchase at the restaurant, couldn't and found it here. Thank you, Amazon. People, buy one of these while they are still available, soon they may not be, it is SO well worth it. Tavern IS going to re-open under the management of the Central Park Boathouse Restaurant, after it is remodeled, so it WILL be back to start a new chapter (maybe under a different name as the LeRoy's may legally own Tavern's), but this era of it is gone. Warner Leroy and family, you did great, thanks for all the memories. Oh, Warners wife and daughter Jennifer are who wrote and put this book together, awesome job, it is a treasure.

Tavern on the Green,
This review is from: Tavern on the Green: 125 Recipes For Good Times (Hardcover)
I proposed to my wife at Tavern on the Green in the middle of winter when NYC received record snowfall. It's a wonderful place and great restaurant. The book is fantastic, for memories, recipes and ideas. We had one before but the dog ate it. No joke, she destroyed it.

Great Cookbook! Could become the family's favorite!,

I live diagonally across the United States from NYC, but enjoyed dining at Tavern on the Green when I was in graduate school on the East Coast. I was sad to read that the restaurant had closed, and reveled in finding this lovely cookbook in the bookstore one day. OMG! After looking at it in the store, I just had to have it! So, raced home to order it through Amazon.
I am a cookbook collector, and a traveling Foodie, who likes "clean" food (meaning no chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, etc.). I also am interested in historical cookbooks which capture an era's best dishes. This cookbook is what I call "solid", meaning that it is filled with recipes which allow one to cook cleanly with natural ingredients, recipes that all sound delicious, and which represent the Tavern on the Green's era with most everyone's favorite dishes. No odd dishes with hard-to-find ingredients. An added plus is that the recipes in the Tavern on the Green cookbook do not look hard to execute, and execute well. The recipes look fairly straightforward, and pretty healthy. This cookbook could easily become a family's favorite cookbook for great daily meals, special occasions and entertaining! A simple way to raise your family's standard of living, through culinary excellence!

Gorgeous Work from Landmark Restaurant,

Never dined here personally, but certainly heard of its reputation. Now have the chance to cook some of the dishes from their menu. Surprised to find out that they have closed and trying to reopen at another site?
This certainly is not the kind of cookbook for all home cooks, as most all the recipe collection takes some techniques and ingredients which the average home chef does not want to engage in. But for the more adventurous and experienced, this is a delight. Not the type of exotic gourmet chef's work which is not that easily duplicated at home, but this one for the majority of recipes can be accomplished by finding the ingredients and working the steps. What I always find interesting about good cookbooks is the written expose of the chef's philosophy and approach and history and this one has that in spades; excellent little sidebars of history and times at this famous place for the influential to dine. It has full plethora of offerings, from drinks to appetizers to all types of entrees and side dishes as well as desserts, even cheese offering course. There is wonderful sample menu offerings, as well as many full-color photos of the finished dishes. The few sampled so far came out absolutely delightful: Maxwell's Plum drink; Spicy Lamb Meatballs with Tzatziki; Peaches Wrapped with Basil and Prosciutto; Polenta Napoleon with Porcini-Sausage Ragu; There easily are many more that will be trying, this is great collection. Well done documentation of one of US classic places to dine, which will certainly live on in kitchens and dining rooms of those who have this recipe collection and honor their dining guests with these.
