The Tawny Scrawny Lion is worthwhile children's literature.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Tawny Scrawny Lion (Hardcover)
I've been reading this book to my first graders for years. It never fails to inspire lively discussion on such topics as friendship, sharing, trust, and a host of other worthy subjects. The story is fun, and the messages are gentle, but my six year olds never fail to pick up on them. This is a story that has been around since my childhood and it is as entertaining and fresh a story as it was then. I highly recommend this book.

Humorous for adults, kids love it,

This review is from: Tawny Scrawny Lion (Hardcover)
This re-issue in hardcover is a welcome relief from all of the Disney/PBS pulp Golden Books has been dishing out. Summary: a lion is still scrawny due to the running he has to endure to capture his daily meal. The thinning herd cunningly convinces an unsuspecting fat rabbit to walk up to the lion as an emissary to "talk things over." The rabbit invites the lion to a carrot stew dinner with his nine fat siblings. The lion goes along, dreaming of ten rabbits, but all ends well. It's a kid's book, after all. A vegetarian fable, of sorts! Parents will appreciate the dark humor. Great for 3 - 4 year olds. A good companion book is the Saggy, Baggy Elephant, also in hardcover reprint, with the same artist and writer.

No "Carrot Stew" song included on CD,
By Betty Gilliland "Mrs. Betty" (Hico, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Tawny Scrawny Lion (Little Golden Book & CD) (Hardcover)
The original cassette tape included the wonderful song "Carrot Stew" which was what really made the story so fabulous. Unfortunately, the CD does not have the song on it. What a shame. The song is so cute that we still sing it after 26 years! Someone needs to put it back in!! The fact that the song is not included should have been put in the product description. The book itself is great, but with the song, it's wonderful.

As Delightful Today as it was Back in 1952,

This review is from: Tawny Scrawny Lion (Big Little Golden Book) (Hardcover)
This gem is one of the Golden Book classics, first published 1952 and it's as delightful now as it was then. Besides, any book which describes a lion as "jolly as all get out" is sure to be one little readers will love.
