Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Maxi, the ebullient canine star of The Adventures of Taxi Dog and Maxi, the Hero, bounds through this holiday title with characteristic cheer. He and his kind master Jim rescue a litter of abandoned kittens and, in the ultimate spirit of Christmas, give a lift to the jolly fat man himself when Santa's sleigh breaks down. The Barraccas' peppy verse stumbles in a few places, but manages to sustain the already established upbeat nature of Jim and Maxi's friendship. Ages 4-8.

From Booklist

Ages 4-8. Jim and Maxi, the taxi-driving duo popularized in The Adventures of Taxi Dog (1990), Maxi, the Hero (1991), and Maxi, the Star (1993), awake to a snowy Christmas Eve. After trimming their tree and building a "snow dog" replica of Maxi, the two come to the rescue of six abandoned kittens, which they take to the taxi garage. "Each lucky tabbie went home with a cabbie" while one kitty joins Jim and Maxi as they shuttle last-minute shoppers around New York City. Suddenly, Santa, his reindeer, his load of toys, and remnants of his sled crash to the ground before them: "I lost flight control? When I left the North Pole," Santa said. "What on earth shall I do?" The solution--of course--hitch the reindeer to Jim and Maxi's taxi. Ayers' luminous oil paintings delight in the holiday sights and lights of New York City--Particularly when the skybound taxi leaves the glowing city below to continue Santa's route. Such fanciful touches as a jar of seasonal green and red dog biscuits atop the kitchen counter and a penguin perched on a city curb give punctuations of humor to an already winning holiday read. 4.0 out of 5 stars Cute Story, December 12, 2010
This review is from: A Taxi Dog Christmas (Hardcover)
My toddler really likes this one. It has melodic text and the illustrations are great. I don't mind reading it to her over and over because I really like it too. Can't wait to get some more Taxi Dog books.

2.0 out of 5 stars Two boys' review: Sequelitis dilutes this franchise to mediocrity, November 30, 2008

This review is from: A Taxi Dog Christmas (Hardcover)
Sequelitis often dilutes a franchise to mediocrity. So is the case with A Taxi Dog Christmas, the fourth book in the series, following The Adventures of Taxi Dog, Maxi the Hero and Maxi the Star.

This Christmas adventure is a clichéd mess. Santa crashes his sleigh and turns Jim and Maxi to -- ready for the big surprise ending?? -- substitute their taxi and save Christmas. The taxi is hooked up to Santa's team of flying reindeer at the end of the book. Too bad that wasn't the start of the story because there's some interesting directions you could take from there.

Only the most fervent Taxi Dog fans will enjoy this book. I recommend everyone else try one of these Christmas stories instead:

Great Joy by Kate DiCamillo, the Newbery Medal-winning author of The Tale Of Despereaux;
Santa Claus the World's Number One Toy Expert by Marla Frazee;
Christmas Magic by Sue Stainton; and
The Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore and illustrated by Douglas W. Gorsline.
