My eighteen month old son and I discoverd this story in a Little Golden Book box set. The first edition was published in 1946 and the illustrations have a notable charm from that era. The story was written in the third person with the characters speaking in whimsical rhyme. Even the taxi has an excitable personality as it "wiggles" and "jiggles" through the traffic "bouncing" and "jouncing" its passengers along the way. My son's favorite part is when the Taxi-driver Man must honk the horn to get through the traffic. This is a very fun story! My son was hooked after we read it the first time. And now I am looking for a first edition!

I'm sad to see this title is now out of print. It was one of my father's and my favorite books to read together when I was very small. I well remember reciting along with him. "we're a speedy pair, we'll get you there." I *will* be getting my hands on a copy of it, if I can ever manage it. That and Fiona's Bee (also out of print and hard to find) were my absolute favorites growing up.

This is the first book I ever read by myself, at age 3 1/2. That was 65 years ago. According to my mother, I used to say, and my baby sister (age 1) would repeat -- sort of -- "We're a speedy pair, we'll get you there!" An infinite number of times, which drove her nuts, and she never recovered. Additionally, we lived in a house right next to railroad tracks in Ft. Worth, Texas. I was fascinated by trains as a toddler, and still am.

The politically correct among us will resent Bill, the cabbie, for always having a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. And the safety-conscious will obsess over Mom, the backseat driver, repeating the refrain, "We're 10 minutes late, and the train won't wait!" which became another of my catch phrases. Of course, the driver breaks every traffic law in the book, and is actually helped a bit by a sympathetic cop, who must have met his ticket quota for the month.

Nevertheless, a most enjoyable book, even though today it's as dated as that 1942 Ford Bill's driving. I recommend it to children of all ages, especially those my age.

I was about 2 when my Mom read me this book. Since the first time she read it, I would run around the house yelling "Tacky Hooey, Tacky Hooey!" They finally figured out I wanted them to read The Taxi that Hurried". Something about the book struck me as so fun. You never know what book will spark a child's imagination, but it should always be encouraged!
