5.0 out of 5 stars Together They are a Speedy Pair, April 1, 2000
By Julie DiGirolamo (Pacific Grove, CA) - See all my reviews
My eighteen month old son and I discoverd this story in a Little Golden Book box set. The first edition was published in 1946 and the illustrations have a notable charm from that era. The story was written in the third person with the characters speaking in whimsical rhyme. Even the taxi has an excitable personality as it "wiggles" and "jiggles" through the traffic "bouncing" and "jouncing" its passengers along the way. My son's favorite part is when the Taxi-driver Man must honk the horn to get through the traffic. This is a very fun story! My son was hooked after we read it the first time. And now I am looking for a first edition!

5.0 out of 5 stars we're a speedy pair, we'll get you there, September 6, 2006
By gallian (Arlington, MA USA) - See all my reviews
I'm sad to see this title is now out of print. It was one of my father's and my favorite books to read together when I was very small. I well remember reciting along with him. "we're a speedy pair, we'll get you there." I *will* be getting my hands on a copy of it, if I can ever manage it. That and Fiona's Bee (also out of print and hard to find) were my absolute favorites growing up.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 stars only because it annoyed my mother so much, March 21, 2005

My mom absolutely hated this book, which is probably why my brothers and I requested that she read it so often. She found the rude lady ("We're ten minutes late and the train won't wait!" my mother would snarl) to be beyond contempt and rendition of the lady's voice more than showed it. On top of it, what exactly is the message here? Drive like a maniac, endanger lives, and somehow you will be seen as a hero? No thank you. My mom managed to "lose" this book not too long after we got it, and I cannot say that we particularly missed it once it was gone. Suffice it to say, I won't be reading it to my own children anytime soon. Jerk, whiz, indeed.
