Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-- Huey, the basset hound narrator, tells how his New York City apartment life changes after his owners bring home Taxi, a part Siamese cat, to keep him company. Taxi claims to be a ninja, and sleeps draped over doors (from which he can screech and pounce). But when the family moves to the country and acquires a second stray cat--a beautiful female, Boots--both setting and events become more farfetched. Jealousy and romance take over the plot, logic dissipates, and Huey's account of their adventures begins to sound like the TV cartoons Taxi watches by punching the remote control. Kids will probably enjoy the slapstick scenarios told in slangy style; they sometimes read like Disneyesque transcripts. --Ruth M. McConnell, San Antonio Public Library

From Kirkus Reviews

When Taxi--a part Siamese who bills himself as a Ninja cat- -joins the Walton household, the newly orphaned and perpetually indolent Huey is shaken to his basset hound roots; still, Taxi (accompanied by his best friend Sushi--a knotted leather string) brings adventure and excitement into Huey's life. Huey, a slightly stuffy canine, is ambivalent about Taxi's escapades with burglars, bulls, a raft, and hang gliding; but when Boots, a gorgeous stray cat, comes to live with them, Taxi's bravado vanishes in a cloud of jealousy. His animosity drives Boots away- -until Huey helps him understand his feelings and arranges a chance for him to talk with Boots and persuade her to come home. Though the Waltons seem insensitive to the nature of cats (cleaning Taxi with a Dustbuster?) and the simplistic anthropomorphism annoys, this is generally a light, funny, cute story to be enjoyed without too much carping. On another level, LeRoy uses elements of allegory to illustrate dealing openly with feelings of inadequacy and jealousy. As Taxi tells Huey, ``Sometimes you have to go out and meet life halfway.'' Ritz's many soft-pencil, full-page illustrations are unusually appealing. (Fiction. 8-12) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

This is the Best book ever, and I can't believe it's out of print! It's REALLY, REALLY, REALLY funny, and if you've read it once, you'll read it again. It's a twist of animal humor, a LITTLE, TEENSY, WEENSY bit of romance, and, if I didn't make it clear enough before, HILARIOUS humor. The book's about a dog named Huey, who's telling the story, and his friend, Taxi. Huey's just a good natured hound, but Taxi is a fun loving cat. They soon meet up with Boots, another cat, but Taxi and Boots have a TON of disagreements, so they get off with a bad start. Soon, Taxi finds himself actually LIKING Boots, but she still hates him, and they get into a cat fight, so to speak, but eventually they make up. I can't write enough words to say how great this book is, so I'll cut it down to only nine: You've GOT to read this book!!!!! It's REALLY great!!!!!

I think that Taxi Cat and Huey is a funny book. It belongs in the Hall of Fame for EXTREMELY funny books and animal stories. . Taxi Cat and Huey is a book you will never forget. I love the events in this book; they are very funny. Extremely well written. This book makes me want to read more about the adventures of Taxi, Huey, and Boots. I LOVE this book, and encourage young and old people to read it!

I read this book when I was beginning to read, and I oved it. It is a fun-filled book about three lovable animals who have crazy adventures together. It is not a difficult book to read, but it is great for children just beginning to read chapter books.

This is a "laugh-out-loud" book. I recommend it to the reluctant readers in our school library and they are hooked and will read it again and again. I hope someone reprints it.

It's a real pity this book is out of print and difficult to find, but it's worth any effort you make to find it. The story is narrated by Huey, a spoiled basset hound who lives a predictable if somewhat boring life until his family acquires Taxi Cat, an adventurous goofy self-proclaimed ninja Siamese. After a while (and a few adventures), Huey comes to really like his new companion. Then the family gets *another* cat, Boots, and Taxi Cat is filled with jealousy!

This is a laugh-out-loud story for middle schoolers, with a few pictures and loads of funny adventures. Animal lovers will adore it, and this is a treasure for reluctant readers.

This is one of the best books for children, starting in about 3rd grade on. Even adults enjoy it. It is very funny. It is about the adventures of a dog and cat. It is one of the best children's books I have read. It was already out of print when we got it out of the library when my daughter was a child. When I found this one, I passed it around to all my adult friends and they really enjoyed a nice, clean, easy, very funny, read. Your children will really love this. It is one of those books you will really enjoy reading to them.
