An Amazng Folk Debut, August 29, 2010
This review is from: Taxidermy (MP3 Download)
Englishman is a band out of Kentucky, and one can only hope if there is any justice in the music world that this EP puts them on the map. Fronted by an amazing singer/songwriter, Andrew English, this EP delivers on all fronts, and if you are reading this review do not think any long just download it, as I consider it the best nigh on five dollars I have spent in 2010. From the phasing intro to "Double Torch" (my personal favorite track, and one that has landed in my all time top ten- is that GOOD) to the closing cords of "He-Man Dolls" there is not a dead track on here, as they are all amazing in their own right. Artists that immediately come to mind our Leonard Cohen, Tim Buckley, and Loudon Wainwright III to name some of the heavy hitters of folk, and contemporaneously speaking Deer Tick, AA Bondy, Jeff Buckley and Joe Pug. This is in my humble opinion what music is meant to be, and should be heard by all.
The production work is fantastic, vocally Andrew English voice is simply put mellifluous, and lyrically the songs are some of the best poetry put to music I have heard in the last decade. The songs are deeply introspective, but do not alienate the listener, but instead invite them along on a journey of personal heart ache and self discovery. This is definitely a band I have on my watch list, as I believe they are going to go places, especially once their full length LP comes out later this year.
I would also state that if you get a chance to see these guys live, drop whatever it is you may be doing, and head on out the door, as you will not be disappointed because the true acid test to me (and one that is especially true of folk) is seeing an artist perform the songs live, and this is a band that will defy any expectations. You will walk away a fan, but certainly do not wait to see them live, download this now for you will not be disappointed. In fact you could probably win a whole host of "cool" points by being the first of your friends to spin one of these tracks at your next listening party. This will definitively make my best of 2010 list. Namaste.
