More About the Author

Bonnie Lee is passionate about the one thing that most people hate-- taxes.
For over 20 years, as the owner of Taxpertise (formerly Symmetry Business Services) and as an Enrolled Agent, Lee has represented taxpayers across the country in audits, offers in compromise, tax problem resolution, and non-filing issues. She specializes in resolving tax problems for independent contractors, the self-employed and small business owners.

Since passing the Internal Revenue Service's enrolled agent exam on the first try (a rare achievement akin to passing the Bar on the first go round) in 1990, Lee has dedicated herself to making the labyrinthine world of taxes transparent to the average tax payer.

"I realized that I was very good at helping people conquer their fears about the IRS and taxes--two things that most people find incredibly scary and complicated," explains Lee.

In 2007, Lee mounted her Taxpertise ™ seminars and broadcast the first of her weekly Taxpertise ™ radio broadcasts on KSVY radio in Sonoma County, California. Livestream her show every Tuesday at 1:00 PST at www.sonomasunfm.com.

Her Entrepreneur Press book, Taxpertise, The Complete Book of Dirty Little Secrets and Hidden Deductions for Small Business that the IRS Doesn't Want You to Know offers readers over 20 years of insider experience in dealing successfully and prosperously with the IRS.

"I wrote the book because I wanted to make the "secret" world of the IRS visible for taxpayers," Lee says. "From a full-scale office audit to offers in compromise and everything in between, Taxpertise ™ deals with it and makes it fear-free and resolvable."

A native of San Francisco, Lee knew early on that she had a head for business.
"In high school I had the same teacher for American History as I had for Business Law. One day he asked me, 'You're a smart girl. Why do you have a C- in history and an A+ in business law?' I knew right then and there that I was cut out for business and finance," she remembers.

After attending San Francisco State University, Lee was certified as a tax preparer in 1985 and as an enrolled tax agent in 1990. In 1993 she moved her business from Belmont, California to Sonoma, California and concentrated on Taxpertise and her mission to take the ire out of IRS.

"Through my book, my articles for foxbusiness.com, and my radio broadcasts I'm reaching out to thousands of taxpayers who are confused, frightened, or just plain concerned that they don't have all the information to resolve their tax issues," says Lee. "My mission is enlightenment. The old maxim, 'Knowledge is power' could not be more appropriate, when dealing with the IRS. I'm empowering people to claim what's fair and resolve their problems to become compliant, prosperous taxpayers instead of tax evaders. In the end, that makes the IRS happy, too!"

I have to say I was quite disappointed when reading this book. There are a few good parts, but it definitely left a lot to be desired..

First the pros:

It is an easy read, that is for sure. The book is well organized and easy to follow. There are some entertaining stories which help to nail down the basics as well. For such a boring topic such as taxes, I must say the author does a very good job of making it interesting and keeping your attention.

There is a guide to tax forms and what some of the different lines mean, in addition to where you would take certain deductions.

There is some good advice on how to deal with auditors, prepare for them, what to do in case you get audited, and how to prevent audits.

A short section on how to find a good tax pro is a good topic.

Cons:

The LLC is completely omitted from the text. How a small business tax book can completely ignore this type entity is beyond me.

I'm not sure I would call many of these dirty little secrets. In fact, I did some research on the web prior to reading this book and found most of the information easily with a simple google search. The reason I bought this book was I hoped to get some more insight and detail about small business taxes and ways to work within the confines of the law to get more than just the rulebook interpretation, and to have a "Guide" to look back to come tax time... but it seemed like more or less a rehashing of basic business tax concepts that lead you to go to IRS.gov or to your tax pro for more detail right when you feel like a more detailed explanation would really be helpful. Of course, this would be at the expense of making it more dull and losing the reader.

I bought "Taxpertise: The Complete Book of Dirty Little Secrets and Tax Deductions for Small Business the IRS Doesn't Want You to Know" because as a small business owner, I felt like I was giving way too much of my hard-earned money to the IRS. I had already heard about some deductions we didn't take that could have saved us thousands of dollars a year on our tax burdon, and Taxpertise confirmed that and more.

Taxpertise is an easy read, and the author makes reading a book about the most boring subject on earth actually pretty pleasant. Her light-hearted and fun writing style, stories about past clients, and general sense of humor made it as easy read. I read the whole book in a few hours, and had a couple pages of notes to research for future taxes and possibly amendments to our last few returns.

If you're an accountant or tax pro, or have a lot of experience doing small business taxes chances are this book is not for you. It's targeted more at individuals who don't know a lot, or people starting a small business.

As background, in "real life" I am a CPA with over 20 years of professional experience. I am not a tax expert but a financial reporting kind of person, but I do know my way around the basics of taxation law.

On an overall basis, the author does a great job of breaking things down for the everyday person to understand, including some do's and dont's, I believe everyone who is operating their own business should understand: if you miss a lot of the basic deductions, you are unnecessarily giving away money to the IRS. The writing style is in plain-English, and doesn't attempt to overwhelm you with complex language or citations to IRC Section this or that. The majority of this information is what every small business owner's CPA should be telling his or her client throughout the year.

If you are beyond the startup phase of your business, most of this information will not be new to you: it is fairly straight forward and I really didn't see too many "Dirty Little Secrets" that made me have an "aha" moment: most of this information is found in introductory business how-to guides that feature the startup that most of you have seen elsewhere.

If you have no prior business experience, this guide will be very handy; if you already have the basics or have been in business for a couple of years, you probably want to give this one a pass. I originally picked this up for free during a Kindle promotion and, as I type this review, the pricing is $9.99: that's a little steep to me for the value of the information conveyed.

I drank a pot of coffee and got ready for my colonoscopy when I picked up this book about taxes. I'm a mess and need some good advice on putting my taxes together, and I'm sure I am the only person in that situation.

But I read the introduction and had a laugh. I read how to get organized and thought, "I can do that!" I read another chapter and then another and before I knew what was happening, I had read the entire book! In fact, I went through some sectrions again and took a few notes. Ms Lee may not be Dr. Phil, but she sure showed me ways to improve the quality of my life. And we're talking taxes here!

OK, the information is great and it is presented in such a way that you may think taxes are fun. Reading Taxpertise is like finding a fountain of cold beer in the middle of Death Valley.

Are ya getting that I give this book my highest recomendation?
