4.0 out of 5 stars Cheap and functional
It works as described and has a nice little flip-out stand, but the LCD screen is awful. The LCD screen is very very dim unless viewed from the correct straight on angle. There is a long wire with an external probe that cannot be detached. I use this unit on my desk, so the wire is unnecessary. The indoor / outdoor temperatures seem to vary by ~0.8 degrees. For the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Barely Functional
This product is not worth $10. Its temperature and humidity gauge is barely functional. The construction is shoddy, the backlight does not work, even with fully charged 1 AAA battery, the screen is only visible at 40-50% opacity, and sometimes is completely not visible unless you tilt it up and down and keep adjusting and maybe it'll come back on. If they had priced it...

If they had priced it at $3.99 it would have been more worth it. I'm very disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars no backlight, April 1, 2009

Device reads temps ok, but buttons for backlight and changing all settings do not work at all. Since gives temp and I don't need the backlight I will keep it, but it should work as advertised.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very accurate, July 1, 2009
This review is from: Taylor 1523 Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer and Hygrometer (Kitchen)
I recently bought this to measure the difference in temperature in various outdoor locations, I started by putting 3 of them in the exact location so they would start with the same temp and humidity level. Unfortunately, they never reached a point where they had the same reading. It's good but not accurate.

For the low price of this unit, it gets the job done.

In trying to keep my all electric house bills down I try monitering the room temperature regularly. This is a nice unit that seems to be pretty accurate and doing it's job. A detachable outdoor temperature cord would have been nice. The backlight does not light up as it looks in the photos, rather dim little light on each side. Other annoying thing is the button for the light it's flush with the body and in the dark is a little awkward to push. I am very picky on most things that could have been better engineered but overall I still recommend this product.

This unit is inexpensive, but there are others on the market around the same price. I got it today, and the backlight on mine does not work. It is cheaply made, it must cost under a dollar per unit. I am using it to monitor the humidity in one room. I don't need an outdoor sensor, but it's built in -- I had wrongly assumed it would be of the 1/8" jack variety. It will serve my purpose, but I would not buy another one. Nor do I intend to buy a Taylor again (though it is really hard to say, since some of these cheap gizmo companies sell products under a range of names). It is made in China.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive little device, January 23, 2012

Five 28 (Chicago, Ill USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Taylor 1523 Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer and Hygrometer (Kitchen)
I bought one of these from a local merchant a few years ago to measure the indoor humidity after I had a whole house humidifier installed on my furnace. I calibrated the unit with table salt and it checked out accurate as far as the humidity levels. The thermometer is being used to measure indoor temps as well and there is a one degree difference between this and a different thermometer I have in the same room. Pretty accurate if you ask me. Other reviewers mentioned the difficulty seeing the display. They are pretty accurate in their assessment, as it is sometimes hard to see, especially when the batteries start to get old (the display gets dimmer). For a bit more than a sawbuck, though, you can't go wrong.
