Great Thermometer!!,

This review is from: Tru Temp Refrigerator-Freezer Thermometer (Kitchen)
I purchased two of these thermometers from Target a few years back and really liked them. Target stopped carrying them so I turned to the best shopping site ever to get a few more. The two new thermometers were exactly the same as the previous two from Target so I was very happy about that. I made sure the ones from Amazon weren't cheap fakes or rejects by placing them side by side with the Targets and they were spot on, no variance in temp.
I have a garage fridge that gets a bit testy in the cold Minnesota winters so I cannot use the freezer section for about four to five months out of the year. The other seven or eight months we use it to store frozen treats and ice cream so it is critical to know when it's time to yank stuff out before it melts and spills everywhere. These thermometers do the job perfectly. The remaining two thermometers are in my house fridge and give me a constant update on temp. Throughout the year it is necessary to adjust cooling settings both in the house and garage fridges so these make that job a snap. Neither of my fridges are fancy so turning the cooling knob from three to four doesn't tell me a thing but all the guesswork is gone now. Lastly the most important and helpful part of these thermometers is the color coding. The temperature danger zone is clearly marked and makes it very easy to just glance and know you are safe. The words REF are visible in the pink section on the thermometer so you know immediately if there is a problem or not. As a restaurant manager for four years I understand the importance of proper food temperature. I would not chance my families health especially knowing I could have easily spent five or six bucks to help prevent a food borne illness. If you've ever had one you know what I mean.

Decent for the price, temperature slightly off.,

I calibrated this thermometer using an ice water bath as a reference. The ice water bath is at 32F. The thermometer sat in the ice bath (inside two Ziploc bags to keep water out) for about an hour or so inside my refrigerator. The temperature on the dial read 34F. Now I know that the thermomter is slightly off, but I can subtract 2F from the indicated temperature to get the true temperature. Given the cheap price, I can't complain. Worth the money.

At a glance confirmation for your fridge and freezer,

I had a problem with our freezer and wanted to get thermometers to confirm that all was working right.
These fit the bill and were price right. They have color coded areas on the face that show the proper temps and make it very easy to visually confirm temps whenever you open the door.

Necessary item for the fridge/freezer,

Bought 2 - one for the fridge, the other for the freezer right after I bought a new fridge due to the old one that stopped cooling/freezing. Didn't want to rely on the 0-9 dial settings of the fridge to be accurate and now I know exactly what the temps are! Reasonable price, lightweight, takes up very little space.

This thermometer works well. Just make sure to place it in the back of your fridge to minimize temperature fluctuations from opening and closing the door. Overall I would recommend to anyone looking for a basic fridge thermometer.

classic freezer/refridgerator thermometer,

This is the classic design I was looking for, and it works just fine. I can read it without searching for my reading glasses.
The seller took an unusually long time getting it to me (by Amazon standards) but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and accept that it's not usually the case. Even so, if you're in a big hurry to get this, you might want to pop over to your nearby Smart N Final and see if they have the same item there; in typical Murphy's Law fashion I found the same style for sale there, not long after I'd ordered one online.

Most people don't think much about the actual temperatures in their refrigerators, unless it is one of the premium types that has a thermometer built in. You NEED to monitor your temps! It's the only way to ensure that it is providing the right temperatures, otherwise, it's guess work. The other Taylor thermometer (5924) was a tad too big at 3 inches, so I went with this one with a 2 inch dial, and this also has a dark blue freeze section on the dial bar unlike the other one, which makes it slightly easier to read. Generally, consumer thermometers are inaccurate. I would expect them to be around 5 degrees off. After the ice-water test (don't dip them in water, use a zip lock bag), the 3 units I have varied at -1, -2, and -3 degrees off. Acceptable performance at this price range. They're not expensive, so there's no reason you shouldn't have one in your fridge.

I hammock camp and solar cook. For both of these activities knowing the temperature is important. Though this is designed to be used in the refrigerator it works fine in the solar oven, the needle just loops around. With an oven thermometer it helps get a fine tune degree, that most oven thermometers in the same price range wont give. I prefer these metal spring thermometer to either the alcohol/mercury type, as these spring wont burst. I had a few alcohol thermometers burst in my solar ovens. Don't put them in direct flame though. The metal gets thrown out of wack and gets stuck. They are great for the throw away needs I have for them and take a beating. I prefer these over the electric type because I am not battery depended, a post oil-crash consideration.

There is nothing fancy about this thermometer, and there doesn't have to be. It works. Great thermometer for the price. I bought one for my outdoor freezer and one for my refrigerator inside. It gives me an accurate reading in both. I would buy one again.

I like the color coding it has for freezer, fridge, etc... at a glance I can see if the temp is where it should be. The hook and stand makes it easy for me to place almost anywhere in the fridge or freezer, and if it's in the rear, i can take a quick glance to check. |
