This review is from: Taylor 5599 440 Pound Tempered Glass Body Fat-Body Water Scale (Health and Beauty)
There may only be seven reviews for this scale, but there's a reason that all seven of us have rated this product with 5 stars; it is a marvelous machine. You get 5 numbers: weight, body fat, muscle mass, water percentage and bone mineral mass. There is an athletic setting and a regular setting. When I checked body fat (the most examined number) in both athletic and regular mode, the range of fat seemed consistent with a range for my height, weight and build. Obviously, each user will choose the setting that seems most accurate to them (athletic or normal). The only issue that I have with the scale is in the length of time that information is displayed. Weight is flashed three times and then is solid for about 5 seconds before the scale turns itself off. As well, the body percentages cycle three times before they turn off. I would prefer for the numbers to show as long as you are on the scale. I think that the manufacturers designed it that way to preserve battery life. Nevertheless, if you do repeated tests within the same time span, you get consistent results (no variations). So, the consistency alone is the main reason for getting this scale. I highly recommend this product. Even if you just use it for the scale it's worth it.

Taylor 5599 440 Pound Tempered Glass Body Fat-Body Water ScaleReceived scale and it looked great. Also worked great. Unfortunately it was for only 10 days. The scale then reflected weights varying as much as 10 pounds. I mean it was all over the place. I put in fresh batteries. No change. I then called Taylor customer service. I got a recording saying they had a heavy customer demand and that my call would be taken in order. I was given the option to leave my phone number. I decided to wait. After 18 minutes I gave up and pressed the keypad number to leave my phone number. I was then transferred to leave my number only to get a recording telling me that the recorder line was full. The phone then disconnected me. I called Amazon and they are sending me a replacement. Hope it works better than the orginal. I can understand a product breaking, what I cannot understand is such shabby customer service. Buy With Caution, Ray Taylor 5599 440 Pound Tempered Glass Body Fat-Body Water Scale

I've been using this scale (Taylor 5599) for about 4 months and, so far, had no problems. I bought it new and the readings for weight and body fat seem to be about right. I would buy it again with no hesitation from my experience over the last few months. The scale was set up for myself and another user with ease. The manual is adequate but a little more information would be nice especially on the bone mass readings and their accuracy/usefulness particularly in (us) seniors. Cj

This scale was always inaccurate as compared to all the other scales at my gym. It was 3-4lbs (or about 3%) off consistently. It then started to give totally different readouts each time I stepped on it, sometimes by more than 20lbs. Now it won't give readouts at all. I have to get another scale now, because this one is worthless.

I recently started on the HCG protocol for weight loss. It requires that you weigh yourself everyday and needs accuracy so if something worked or didn't work the day before, you can adjust it the following day.I've have stepped on it 7 times in a row and only had one variation of .2lbs. I think you can trick it if you don't stand in the same spot every time (more towards the middle, more out to the side) and I can't guarantee by bathroom floor is perfectly level, so there you go. It's a wonderful product. No complaints. I love that it measures body fat, body water, bone mass and muscle mass. It's really important to make sure you aren't eating your muscles when losing weight. Highly recommended.

This scale appeared to work well the first month I had it. A few months after owning the scale, it started to show me losing weight (my goal was to gain weight, unfortunately) at an alarming rate... eventually, I got fed up with the scale and, using a piece of shelving to distribute the weight evenly, I placed a pair of 60 lb dumbbells (120 lbs total) on the scale to see what it would read. Sure enough, the reading was about 15 lbs too low. Taylor Scale=FAILI then scoured the web to see if there was a way to recalibrate or "zero" the scale. I looked over everything I could find on the company's website. I found nothing helpful and tossed the POS. On a lesser note, I was also a little skeptical of the Athlete vs. Non-athelete bodyfat settings... I think the "athlete" settings were a few percentage points too low, and the non-athlete settings were clearly too high. I'm an active 150lb 25 year-old male, and I do not approve of this product.

Breaks after a month of regular use,

After a month, it gave readings that varied by as much as 50 pounds between readings and a few minutes apart. After resetting the scale and feeding it fresh batteries - it did the same thing. It will now be weighing my garbage can from the inside. JUNK!!

I've had this scale for a couple of months and love using it to calculate my true BMI. I've also read that the method it uses for calculating is highly accurate (second to a $400 procedure involving an MRI type machine). Because I've lifted weights for many years of my life, I understand I'm going to be heavier due to the dense muscle, and the BMI output provides me with an accurate reading over the typical BMI calculation which simply uses height and weight. I've watched my BMI and weight go down in concert with one another and it is truly encouraging!I also have a Wii Fit and it uses the simple calculation to figure out my BMI. This would be truly disconcerting if I trusted the Wii Fit's figure because I understand that muscle weighs a lot more than fat. The Wii Fit shows my BMI at over 29% and says "that's overweight" plumping my poor Mii into a larger body frame, all while she twists about looking at her larger proportions. I only shake my head because I know my REAL scale shows it at less than 23%. You can also save the settings for up to four people so useful for a family, although the manual states it is not accurate for individuals under 10 years old. If you want your true BMI reading and a great looking scale, this is the one for you! **Update July 8, 2010 For quite some time, I've been dealing with the occasional "Err" message when I've gone to weigh myself. And now, I can't get on the scale without it saying "Lo". Sometimes, it will flash my weight for a second before it reads "Lo" - and sometimes, the scale will show that I've lost 3 or 4 pounds out of nowhere and I start to panic that I'm dropping weight way too fast. Then it will correct itself and its back to normal weight again. I've been EXTREMELY frustrated with these messages and think that maybe "lo" means low batteries so now I'm on the hunt to replace them. I haven't reduced the star rating because its possible the batteries simply need to be replaced. We'll see!

Great scale and at a great price. Not only was the scale on sale, but I believe the manufacturer was offering an additional discount through Amazaon at the time of purchase. The scall seems very accurate at displaying body weight. I can't tell how accruate the body composition (fat, water, bone, etc.) numbers are but it is a cool feature. One minor issue is that it is a little difficult to put the scale into the body composition analysis mode since you have to reach down and press the set button with you hand. It's pretty hard to do it with you toe.

This scale is awful. When I first got it, it said I weighed about 30 pounds more than I actually weigh. I tested it with other normal household goods. Still, it consistently overweighed them. So I returned it and got another one.The second one worked great-- for about two months. Then I noticed that the display was dim. Had it really drained the batteries in only two months? I replaced the batteries. The display was still dim. It was a defective scale --but now I could not return it. |
