I have been using this for quite a while for candy making. Although some of the writing has washed off, I can still read the indentations and so continue to use it. Of all of the thermometers I own (and I have several), it is the most accurate. Candy thermometers should always be tested before each use by putting them in boiling water and adjusting your final temperature by any +- they show from true 212F or 100C boiling temp. This one has never needed any adjustments; others have been off 6 to 8 degrees. Because of this, its strength (no exposed glass bulb to break) and its ease in cleaning(dishwasher-proof), this is the only candy thermomoter I recommend when teaching candy making.

This is a terrific thermometer. It registers fairly quickly and has a wide range. The clip allows you to hang it on the side of a pan, and the thermometer itself is protected by its metal frame, so you never have to worry about the bulb resting on the bottom of the pan. I've had this thermometer for quite a while and it has stayed accurate.
Best store it upright and in a place where it won't get jostled.

For 30 years my older style Taylor candy thermometer worked like a charm (until I broke it in the sink), so I had no hesitation about replacing it with the same thing but talked myself into a littl more expensive nicer looking model. After making only a couple batches of fudge and penuche I noticed the numbers are flaking away. They are bold and large but I can see that won't make a difference if they all disappear. The steam from the boiling candy seems to soften them so they flake right off. It does have a heavy duty clip and the bulb of the thermometer is well protected but that's the only good thing I can say. It also is less accurate (water boils at 204 instead of 212 degrees on it).

This is quite a nice thermometer. It's extremely sensitive, so if you have very specific temperatures in your candy recipes, then it will work wonders. The only problem with it is it's awkward shape, which makes it difficult to clean and store. Otherwise, I would highly recommend it.

I have owned this candy thermometer for over 30 years.. I use it, mostly around Christmas time, and can count on it's accuracy and ease of use. It is easy to clean and easy to attach to any sauce pan. Like any fragile product, keep it in a safe place and you will have it for a lifetime.

This thermometer is much larger than I expected. It is difficult when preparing small quantities, such as boiling sugar for buttercream, to gauge the temperature accurately without doing a little balancing act to tip the pan and hold the thermometer in it. It also features a number of unnecessary nooks and crannies that make it difficult to clean, especially once sugar has gotten up to hard ball stage or so.

With those limitations, this is an excellent thermometer. It is accurate, and has sturdy construction. The glass components seem fairly well protected. It is definately more reliable than most little candy thermometers that need endless recalibration, and that tends to make up for the inconveniences for me.

Numbers came right off the scale into the candy I was making. Impossible to avoid because the scale must be submerged in order to read. Had to throw out the thermometer and the candy too.

Also, the reading was a bit off, it indicated a hard crack and it definitely wasn't past the ball stage.

Apparently, from reading other reviews, these problems are not uncommon.
I would definitely op for the higher priced digital candy thermometer at this point.

This thermometer is perfectly designed, with the bulb sitting far enough away from the bottom to give a proper reading. The metal backing makes it very sturdy. The clip can be used to affix it vertically to a pot, or just to prop it up slanted in a smaller pot.

The reading is very accurate, with important temperatures marked. It is a bit difficult to clean unless done so immeadiately after use. I did end up breaking one after scrubbing too hard to get in the crevice, but went right out and bought another one.
