4.0 out of 5 stars Faulty Battery Cover
Works well with one exception. The cover for the watch battery that powers the thermometer broke almost immediately after I got it. I have to tape it shut.

2.0 out of 5 stars Battery cover broke after a couple of months
For the money I'd expect a little more quality. I've had to tape the cover back on. Overall the thermometer was a little disappointing. It takes about 5-10 seconds to get a stable reading. It's not exactly instant read, but it seems accurate. The min and max memory is useful, but they are a little tedious to reset. On the plus side, the auto-off feature is nice...

Sept 9, 2011 Update: I've long since thrown away this thermometer. If anyone is looking for a much better instant read thermometer, look at the ThermoWorks Splash-Proof Super-Fast Thermapen - Instant Read Thermometer. It is available on Amazon for $93. I realize it's almost 4 times as expensive, but after using it for a couple of years now I strongly believe that it is a decision you will not regret.

2.0 out of 5 stars Taylor Professional Thermometer shuts itself off!, April 8, 2002
By A Customer

I received my Taylor Professional [and] it appeared to be behaving normally except it shut itself off after 4 to 7 minutes even while its readings were changing. Now, it is supposed to save its battery life by shutting off if there is no change in its temperature reading for 10 minutes, but it should stay on if its readings are changing. The temperatures were no where near the extremes of the thermometer's range, so this wasn't a case of shutting down because of that. ... I e-mailed the manufacturer about the problem and was told I could return it to them for replacement. I did this and less than three weeks later received a new one from them. Surprise, surprise -- this one behaved the same way, shutting off after 4 or 5 minutes even while its readings were changing. I e-mailed Taylor again about this and suggested they check out their existing supply of this model, as I suspected they had many that were shutting down like this. ... Approximately two weeks later ... I received another package from them containing one of their model 9845 thermometers, a different model! I received no communications from Taylor about this, other than their original e-mail stating I could return my original thermometer to them for replacement. I don't know what I'll do now. I would like a properly functioning 9878 ....

I've had it for nearly a year, battery cover hasen't broken (don't know how you could break it, and I break the battery cover off of everything). I also don't understand why anyone would use this for minutes at a time, but mine has never shot off while I had been using it. It's also not instant read, I got it for the temperature range at the low cost.

I purchased this thermoneter with the hope it would be a step-up from the basic model. The product never met that expectation. The "professional" did not read any faster and after a couple of months the display faded. I have tried serveral batteries without improvement. Stay away from this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great choice., November 15, 2006

This thermometer has been a great asset to me during the course of my employment at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, as well as during my time as a student at Le Cordon Bleu. Easy to use, full-featured and very dependable, I have recommended this thermometer to many people and use it many times each day.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not an instant-read. Very slow, October 10, 2009

I should have read the description better. Taylor does not describe this as an instant read. Also checkout their site, [...], model 9878. Only amazon's offical description writer described it as instant read. I doubt they even used it.

I had a Taylor waterproof thermometer in yellow. It wasn't so waterproof and broke after a year so I decided to buy this. I had no issues with the cheaper yellow one's speed in reading temps. It was an instant read.

This one however is very slow. For the money, I thought it would be quicker than their cheaper line. I've never timed it but it seems like 10+ seconds to get a read. I'll probably get a Thermapen or go back and buy the cheaper yellow one and be more careful with it around water. I don't like standing there with the oven door, grill cover, etc open for 10 seconds while the temp is being taken..

2.0 out of 5 stars New version worse, February 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Taylor 9878E Slim-Line Waterproof Pocket Thermometer (Kitchen)
I have used this numbered thermometer for over 10 years. It started out blue, then black and now yellow. The blue and black held up to heat well. I averaged using them over 2 years.(Always bought 3 at a time) I've had the yellow ones about a month and I'll be lucky to get 6 months out of them.(The head sags where it meets the shaft) My equip operates at 400 F plus, so if you are at lower temps you might be OK. The temp mechanism works fine. The thermometer changed completely in the fall of 2010. Any reviews before that is for a different thermometer.
