Simply the Best,
By Pamela Foot (Blairsville, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Taylor Classic Roast/Yeast Thermometer (Kitchen)
I have used this Taylor thermometer for years and it is reliable, accurate and easy to use. You can use it in the oven while the meat, casserole, etc. is baking. Other thermometers have a glass insertion rod and can break. The stainless steel Taylor goes in without having to make a hole first with another utensil. For Christmas I gave these thermometers to all my children and my parents who could not find them. My husband cannot grill without this thermometer.

This Taylor Thermometer well worth the $,

I had purchased a Taylor thermometer when I moved into my first apartment ,23 years ago, because it was the type my mother had used at home. I had the thermometer about 22 years when it broke. When I tried to find another one it was almost impossible. Finally I found one at Lechters housewares and did they go up in price. Then again, I figured oh well another 22 years....Anyway, I dropped this one just the other day and went back to find Lechter's had closed. So here I am online searching for another. This thermometer is so easy to store because it's flat. I use it whenever I need it to make pizza crust from scratch and for roasts. Unless you need another for making candy (specialty thermometer) you will never need another one. Well worth the money.

Excellent Tool,

I have had my Taylor Classic Yeast/Roast Thermometer for about 30 years (to the best of my memory) and find it an excellent tool. It is utterly simple to use and totally dependable. I wash it in the dishwasher and toss it in a drawer to store. It is not fragile; the stainless insertion rod encases the glass, rendering it rather durable. We use it in the Weber grill, in the oven, and anywhere a cooking thermometer is needed.

I prefer to use thermometers without dials as they are more accurate. I was very pleased to get this thermometer a few days ago. I used it for the first time and it performed well. However, after I removed it from the meat I accidentially dropped it into my sink from about eight inches and the bulb that goes into the meat broke off. Five stars for accuracy, zero for durability. I will order another, but treat it as the fragile item that it is.

i dont do a lot of bread making but i am an avid meat smoker and griller. the taylor classic roast-yeast thermometer has taken the stress out of preparing a feast for my guests. i have tried more expensive thermometers but some read out an obvious wrong temperature and others are very difficult to read. the taylor thermometer solves both problems! whether you do most of your cooking outdoors or in your kitchen this thermometer will give you peace of mind. well worth the price and ships fast.

Good for roasts but not for steaks,

This thermometer takes some time to come up to temperature and it's hard to find the correct spot on the metal to get a good reading. This makes it less than ideal for steaks since by the time the temperature gets to medium rare your steak will be well done. That said though, the temperature reading is accurate and it will work great on any roast where you can get the thermometer deep into the meat. This makes the reading come up faster.

Awesome! Simple, accurate, inexpensive.,
This review is from: Taylor Classic Roast/Yeast Thermometer (Kitchen)
I have one of these and I love that I can trust it to read accurately no matter what. Dial and digital thermometers are subject to failure, and I've been disappointed by faulty readings using both. A glass thermometer is completely passive, so as long as you don't break it, there's nothing to go wrong. Whether your dinner is a $6 chicken, or a $100 ribeye roast, you need / deserve tools you can trust, and you can trust this.
I have a digital meat thermometer with a remote probe that I use for grilling. I love the convenience because I can read it without opening the grill (and losing all the heat), but as stated above, it's history of flakey readings mean I use it for ballpark only. I always use the glass thermometer too, and when digital says "You're close" I start paying attention to the glass thermometer. It's okay to have more than one meat thermometer, really. ;-) Some reviewer here on Amazon said the letters washed off her Taylor Classic Roast / Yeast Thermometer in the dishwasher. Thanks for the heads' up. I wash mine by hand. Here's the gotcha I've found with it: There's some dispute over safe cooking temperature for poultry. The thermometer shown on Amazon lists the finish temp for poultry as 185 degrees, F. I understand that that's been USDA gospel for decades, and still the recommendation in Canada. Recently I've heard 165 degrees F is hot enough to kill the bad stuff, and see that USDA has adjusted their recommendation downward. My thermometer listed the finish temp for poultry at 165 degrees and I found out the hard way that birds cooked to 165 are way too rare for my liking. So when it comes to poultry, cook to the temperature listed in a cookbook you trust. Bottom line: This isn't the most convenient thermometer out there, reading it takes a careful look. But on the plus side, you can trust what it says 100%. Other thermometers ... not so much. And you can't beat the price! Happy cooking!

Made in China Junk,
By
This review is from: Taylor Classic Roast/Yeast Thermometer (Kitchen)
These Taylor thermometers used to be high quality, made in U.S.A. products. Now Taylor has gone the way of many other U.S. manufactures and laid off their workers, and moved their plants overseas. What was once a great product is now junk.
I bought one of these, and the first time I washed it, some of the painted-on text disappeared. By the third washing, it was all gone, making it useless. I then replaced it with another thermometer, Component Design MYT200, which is also made in China but seems to be better made - the numbers haven't disappeared. I would have preferred to buy a U.S. made product, but I don't think there are any.

I recomend this item highly. Can be washed without fear of water inside and can be inside the oven while cooking. works like a charm.

Great Thermometer,

I have owned a Taylor Roast thermometer for 10 years and consider it an essential tool for the satisfactory cooking of roasts, hams, poultry, etc. I started worrying about the fact that I don't have a "back-up" thermometer and was so relieved thatI can get one from Amazon at a good price!
