This thermometer is very accurate when compared to a Reference Thermometer and multiple other thermometers. It responds to a change in temperature within minutes. I would have gladly paid more if this thermometer had a Min/Max Read function. It also does not read quite low enough to use in a freezer, since it only reads down to -4 degrees F. However, this thermometer is the best value digital thermometer that I have purchased. Listed below is some comparitive data--

The thermometer hangs in any direction. The hanger folds down to create a kickstand if you don't want to hang it. It has a very small built-on magnet, however the only metal in my fridge is the wire racks. It will stick precariously to the wire rack or more solidly to the outside of the fridge. Other than the wire racks, there is no other place inside my fridge where the magnet will stick.

It's not instant read, but fast enough. Going from fridge to freezer, it takes maybe 15-20 minutes to arrive at measure. It's very easy to read. The digits are 7/8th inches high. It has an on/off button. I highly recommend it.

Note re battery change: You can insert a small-to-medium sized paperclip into the little hole on the side. By pushing it and holding it straight in about 1/4 inch, this pushes in the little notch that is holding the tray in place. A flathead screwdriver is useful to help slide the tray out.

UPDATE: It's now June 2015, two years later. The thermometer is still working beautifully on its original battery. It spends all its time hanging off a wire rack at about 37F degrees.

I am here buying another one of these thermometers after a power outage where it was indispensable. The display is large and very easy to read and let us monitor the refrigerator temperature changes as we added ice in an attempt to extend our safe-temperature time. And, having a digital number rather than a finicky red line to read helped us close the door much quicker.

By the way, I keep reading reviews here that say that it can't be used to monitor the freezer since it only goes to -4 Fahrenheit, but according to the FDA, "freezer temperature should be 0° F (-18° C)." Everything in my freezer is rock-solid frozen at zero, so I'm personally fine keeping it at that temperature and saving a little electricity, to boot!

Anyway, I've had too many fridge/freezer thermometers over the years and this is the very best one I've used. If you need an easy-to-read, easy to hang, and accurate thermometer for your fridge or freezer, buy this one without hesitation.

Impossible to remove the battery tray. I finally just pried it apart, breaking the unit in the process. I considered it a learning event.

For those not familiar with the product, you are required to insert a paper clip (or similar) into a small hole on the side of the unit in order to open the battery compartment. I tried 20 or 30 times before giving-up.

If you can get past this issue, it may actually work.

OK, First of all I have an order in for a couple of Taylor thermometers here at Amazon, but this one I picked up at Walmart. Just wanted something NOW.
I could not get the battery cover to release as others have noted. Couldn't get the little piece of plastic out therefore it would not work. I saw where Taylor had posted comments and I decided to send an email to the address they left.
Taylor (and specifically Brad) has the best customer service I have ever found!!! Brad immediately sent me a new thermometer. It arrived and I was still having trouble getting the cover to open...but I did manage to get the plastic tab out. So my new one is now working. When I wrote back to Brad at Taylor and told him, he pulled one and tried it himself.
The good news is that the battery should last 5 to 10 years! ! Hopefully I will have figured out the "trick" to getting that pesky battery cover open by then :-)
I am totally happy with my little thermometer and if it will function for the next 5 years, I figure I'd just buy another if I still can't access the battery compartment.
I am told it is not "mission impossible" that it can be done. Not easily for sure, but it can be done.
It is a nice thermometer, stays in place on the side wall of my freezer and so far it's been reasonable (within a couple of degrees) of what it should be. That's really all I can expect.
Thank you Taylor Customer Service!!

Usually the folks at Taylor do a great job in producing quality kitchen gear. The key word is usually. I purchased several of these thermometers for both the freezer unit and our two refrigerators. Besides the name the large digital display sold me on this model. The Taylor 1443 reads both in celsius and fahrenheit. This model is fitted with both a stand and shelf clip. Both do a great job in supporting this unit. The temperature range goes from -40 to 158 degrees fahrenheit and is not that far off the mark. One CR2025 battery is installed in the unit. Accessing the battery compartment will test your patience.

My biggest problem with this model lies with the unit's stability. Whether this thermometer is hanging from the shelf or being supported by the stand, the slightest jarring causes the unit to switch readings. Even when shutting the refrigerator door the thermometer switches from fahrenheit to celsius readings. It goes without saying that the guys in design definitely missed the boat on this digital thermometer. Its too temperamental. The Taylor 1443 digital thermometer is way overpriced for what it does not provide.
