5.0 out of 5 stars Funny. Small size. Big voice, December 10, 2009
This review is from: Taylor Guitars Baby Taylor, BT2, Mahogany, Natural (Electronics)
A PERSONAL OPINION. The Taylor BT2 is a really nice guitar. I did not say The Taylor BT2 is a really nice little guitar. Why? We could talk about guitar size, shape, wood type, action, nut size, and acoustics but it is easier to just say, this guitar is very easy to play and sounds much bigger than it really is. I bought this guitar to carry to parties and family gatherings (I'm the lease musically talented in my family but I got guts) as I was getting tired of toting my big Ovation back and fourth. This little guitar with the big voice was just what I was looking for. Fact is, I messed around trying to buy a used Baby Taylor off eBay and found this guitar sells for $220 to $305 USED. Shoot, I bought a new one for $299. This is a very nice guitar and I am sure the model BT1 is good too; I just like mahogany better than spruce. I recommend this Baby Taylor to anyone as a first guitar or as in my case, a second.

I love my baby Taylor -- it's big enough to produce a decent tone, yet small enough to be really portable. It comes with a nice little padded case, and it fits perfectly in an overhead bin. The sound is significantly fuller and louder than a Washburn Rover or Martin Backpacker. To get a better sound, you'd have to spend a lot more for a high end parlor guitar.

It's not intended to be a first guitar, although it's size might work for a child or smaller person. If you already have a nice full-sized guitar, though, and want something to take with you on your travels, this is one is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Baby Taylor, February 6, 2010

Outstanding playability and great sound for a guitar of this size (hard to find small guitars with a good deep end). The construction and materials are of better quality than I expected for the price.

I played one of these Baby Taylor Mahogoney guitars, at a friends house. She bought it to "learn to play a guitar on" I was so impressed with the quality, size, and sound, I said " I have to have one of these"... I had sold a Tenor guitar, and never replaced it. I wanted something small and has a dynamite sound, until I found this one. I can take this to the Beach, on a plane, very conenvenient. I own 2 Martin guitars, a 12-string, and 6-string accoustic. This guitar needs no bridge adjustment because its already dialed in. It came with top of the line, Elixir guitar strings. Also came with a few booklets explaining how it was made. Reminds me of my Martins. Has a warranty guarantee you can fill out online. Its very well made, and I beleive its made in Mexico by Taylor. But thats OK The price is right. I highly recommend this model to anyone who is learning, or experienced and likes to collect guitars. Main thing is: The sound is Real, not "tinty".... I love this 3/4 Taylor. The gig bag it comes in is high quality as well. Heavy Canvas quality, light brown color. The word TAYLOR is imbedded on the outside of the material... This little BT2 Taylor will be in my collection for year. I am a woman, I play left-handed (self taught).. play upside down with a regular right hander guitar....have played for over 30 years .. This guitar is for anyone ... experienced, or unexperienced... adults, as well as younger people that want to learn to play .. or older people that want to learn. I would highly recommend this guitar...

For what it is worth, I tried out several in a few shops and here are my thoughts:

Taylor GS1 - Best feel and sound by far, but strays from the purpose of the travel guitar. It is smaller than full size, but larger than the BT both in body and length. Price is ~$500 so price was also not quite a fit for the travel purpose. All others below are ~$300.

Martin LX1 - Better bottom end, heavier guitar, laminate sides for sturdiness and solid top for better tone (than LXM) thicker and rounder neck. Felt the top-end was muted and the shape of the neck was less to my taste. All criticisms on this were a matter of preference - I could see myself going this direction if I were more drawn to the deeper tone and thicker feel of the neck.

Martin LKK - All black guitar. More laminate surfaces than LK1 but also a slightly thinner tone (IMO).

Taylor Swift version of Baby Taylor - Solid spruce top with ornate decals. Great volume for its size and nice high-end with weaker bottom-end than the Martins. The flowery "Love Love Love" logo was too feminine for my 40-something taste.

Taylor BT1: Seemed less articulate than the TS-BT but that could have been difference in string wear. Also, looks were somewhat plain and less inviting overall.

Taylor BT2: Had the right combo of overall volume, brightness, mid-range warmth and neck feel for my taste. I also liked the warm look of the mahogany. Like the LX1, it has laminate sides for sturdiness and solid top for volume and tone.

I went for the BT2... and I've got 30 days to change my mind...

5.0 out of 5 stars Feels, sounds, and looks GREAT!, November 17, 2010
This review is from: Taylor Guitars Baby Taylor, BT2, Mahogany, Natural (Electronics)
For years I've wanted to learn to play guitar. In my 20s, I owned several acoustic guitars, but they just didn't feel good, and I ended up frustrated, and found it difficult to learn. Acoustic guitars seemed bulky, and the smaller scale guitars, sounded very tinny. This gem is the exception. Even capoed up, it sounds beautiful. Even people who have been playing for years, on a full size guitar, enjoy playing my Baby Taylor. It feels VERY nice, and I have been able to stick with learning to play. The price is very reasonable! I would recommend this to adults who have smaller hands, or difficulty speading your finger out. Or petite people, who dislike the bulkiness of larger acoustic guitars. Or to younger adults, and kids, they would certainly be able to enjoy it for years to come! Makes a nice travel guitar too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lasted years, but eventually neck bent and body cracked., July 11, 2011

I got this guitar maybe 8 years ago. Due to its small size it went with me everywhere. New, this guitar has a very bright voice and woody sound, at jam sessions the tone always stood out pleasantly. Its not the deep solemn tone you get out of a larger guitar, but it is very warm and natural. The action was also great, and its light weight.

The tone stayed constant over the years, but the action got worse and eventually the body cracked on mine. This only brings it down one star, because getting 8 years out of a guitar with lots of use before it breaks down really isn't that bad, I consider it the price of something smaller and lightweight that goes with you everywhere. But I'm posting here to give a heads up: if you want something that's gonna travel with you long term, you might want to look for something a little bigger and more solid.

I love this thing! It has great sound, it's beautiful, and the size is just right for my wife. I even find I prefer it to my full-size acoustic; it's just so easy to play, and it goes anywhere. Five stars for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite All Time Guitar, February 24, 2011

I have always been a fan of the Taylor guitar sound. The Baby is the perfect size for me with a really big sound. I have had bigger Taylors but I keep coming back to the clean lines and sounds of the Baby. The mahogany model has a more richer sound than the spruce top.. In my opinion. The ebony fretboard is awesome. Give it a try.
